Pros and Cons of Nationalism

+ deep devotion to one's nation + a unifying force within a country - can cause intense comp. among nations - countries want to overpower the other - fierce rivalry between nations

Schlieffen Plan

Why did Bismarck want to isolate France? How?

He saw France as the greatest threat to peace. He believed that France still wanted revenge for its defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. He isolated France by forming the Dual Alliance.

Triple Alliance

Italy later joined the two countries of the Dual Alliance; Bismarck makes treaty with Russia (Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria will join later)

Russia entered into alliance with France -> this was Bismarck's fear because it would lead to a 2-front war (fight on both borders)

They had a long history or nationalist uprisings and ethnic clashes.

They hoped to absorb all the Slavs on the Balkan Peninsula. There was a large Slavic pop. (Serbian nationalism)
