How can you start a service from the command prompt?

"net start <service name>"

How can you stop a service from the command prompt?

"net stop <service name>"

How do you issue the tracert command?

"tracert" <IP address or URL> --> ENTER

nslookup

1. "enables you to determine exactly what information the DNS server is giving you about a specific host name." 2. enables you to see domain name and IP information for a computer i.e. you enter a host name (for example, "whatis.com") and find out the corresponding IP address

ARP -a

1. Address Resolution Protocol, 2. command that displays a recent history of sessions to other computers on the LAN and the IP addresses and MAC addresses of each session; it does not show Internet-based sessions, 3. just typing "ARP" gets a help file

If you are able to see other devices on your network, but can't access the internet, which command line command would help you to see if the router is the problem?

1. TRACERT, 2. TRACERT works even better at this point if you get around any DNS problems by using a legitimate IP address instead of a FQDN name.

How is TRACERT useful?

1. Timing information from TRACERT can be useful for detecting a malfunctioning or overloaded router. 2. It can also be used to determine if you are able to get out on the Internet.

netstat

1. aka net statistics, 2. command that shows the network statistics of a computer (bytes received, inbound and outbound TCP/IP connections, etc.) 3. It can also be used to view packet statistics, such as how many packets have been sent and received and the number of errors.

netstat -an

1. command that shows the network statistics of a computer (shows TCP AND UDP sessions, but in numerical format), 2. Shows the ports on the inbound side (local address) and outbound side (foreign address), 3. It also shows which ports are in open (established), listening, time-wait, or close-wait status.

net use

1. command-line command for "mapping network shares." i.e. connecting to a share 2. For example, if the "research" folder on a computer called "Server1" is shared, you can use this command to map the folder to your computer's x: drive, 2. allows you to view network drives or map new ones

net view

1. command-line command that "enables you to view a network quickly" i.e. identify the names of the computers on the local network, 2. It tells you *nothing* about getting out on the Internet.

ping

1. enables you to see if your system can talk to another system (it only tests the final destination, unlike the tracert command), 2 At the command-line, type "ping" and either the IP Address or DNS name of the system followed by ENTER e.g. ping www.chivalry.com ---> ENTER

ipconfig /all

1. in Windows, to see ALL of the network settings or IP settings, 2. but NOT about your ability to get out on the Internet

AT & V

1. modem diagnostic command, 2. used to verify connectivity and display settings between a computer and a connected dial-up modem, 3. most modem commands begin with AT

nbtstat

1. stands for NetBIOS over TCP/IP statistics, 2. displays protocol statistics and name tables

Why use nbtstat?

3. "old command-line utility" that can still be used to "resolve host names on the network when a DNS server is not available" ----"useful for troubleshooting naming issues in small workgroups"

ICACLS

A tool to enable you to configure NTFS permissions from the command line.

Names of the most common tools used to test and configure TCP/IP?

Command-line utilities: 1. ping, 2. ipconfig, 3. ifconfig, 4. nslookup, 5. tracert, 6. traceroute.

traceroute

In Mac OS X and Linux at the command-line, this command "shows the route that a packet takes to get to a destination."

tracert

In Windows at the command-line, this command "shows the route that a packet takes to get to a destination" i.e. it identifies all of the routers along the way between you and the final destination. If one has failed, the trace either stops working or displays asterisks instead of ping times.

ipconfig

In Windows, this command provides a quick glance at the system's network settings i.e. the network card's configuration.

ipconfig /renew

Using this command will give you a new IP address, but it only works on DHCP-provided addresses (NOT static IP addresses).

ipconfig /release

Using this command will release your old IP address, but it only works if you have a DHCP-provided address (NOT if you have a static IP address).

nbtstat -A

allows you to check the name table of the remote computer by connecting to it with an IP address

net share

allows you to create shares

netstat -n

command that shows the network statistics of a computer (IP addresses and port numbers)

netstat -a

command that shows the network statistics of a computer (shows TCP AND UDP sessions)

net view <computer name>

command-line command that "shows any shares on the machine [specified] and whether [or not] they are mapped drives"

net statistics

displays information about the server or workstation services

The GET command...

downloads a file from the FTP server.

ipconfig /flushdns

empties the DNS cache (which has the domain name to IP address mappings)

ping -l

enables you to control how big the ping packets are

nbtstat -a

used for querying a remote system's NetBIOS name

ifconfig

used in Mac OS X and Linux to view all of the network settings

nbtstat -c

used to display the cached NetBIOS names of a system

If you can ping an IP address but not a hostname, then _________________

you know it's a DNS error.

If you can ping a hostname (such as a remote web server) but you can't get to it with your web browser, then __________________

you know it's a problem with your browser or HTTP or port 80, which may possibly involve the router configuration (like a blocked port).

ping -t

the ping is sent continuously until you stop it with the break command (CTRL-C); once you stop the operation, an average of the ping results is displayed, as well as the total number of packets sent, received, and lost

PUT FILE.TXT will....

upload the file to the FTP server.
