Reciprocals of Fractions

To get the reciprocal of a fraction, flip it upside down. The reciprocal of 2/3 = 3/2. If you multiply the reciprocal of a fraction by itself you always get 1. 2/3 x 3/2 - 1.

Simplify

To reduce/simplify, pull out greatest common factor of both the numerator and denominator. To reduce 6/8 to its lowest terms you factor out the greatest common factor: 6/8 factor out 2/2 and you get 3/4.

Invert and multiply

When dividing fractions, first write down the first fraction, then change the division sign to multiply and invert or flip the second fraction. Then solve the problem by multiplying: 1/2 divided by 2/3 changes to 1/2 X 3/2= 3/4.

Convert an improper fraction to a mixed number

...A change in the form of a measurement, different units without a change in the size or amount. Example is to convert an improper fraction to a mixed number: 10/7 converts to 1 3/7

Reducing a fraction

...Rewriting a fraction into one with the smallest whole number denominator. Reduce 2/4 to lowest terms = 1/2

Adding Unlike Fractions (they have different denominators)

1. Convert fractions to have common denominators 2. Add the numerators 3. The denominators stay the same 4. Simplify your answer 1/4+3/10 = 10/40+12/40=22/40=11/20

Subtracting Unlike Fractions

1. Convert the fraction so they have a common denominator. 2. Subtract the numerators. 3. The denominators stay the same. 4. Simplify (reduce) the answer. 5/6 - 2/4 = 5/6 x 2/2 - 2/4 x 3/3 =10/12 - 6/12 = 4/12 factor out 4/4 =1/3

Subtracting Like Fractions

1. Subtract the numerators 2. The denominators stay the same 3. Simplify (reduce) the answer

Adding Like Fractions (they have the same denominators)

1.Add the numerators. 2. Denominators stay the same. 3. Simplify (reduce) the answer. 5/8 + 2/8 = 7/8
