Septic Shock

An acute infection, usually systemic, that overwhelms the body (toxic shock syndrome). Poisonous substances accumulate in bloodstream and blood pressure decreases, impairing blood flow to cells, tissues, and organs. What type of shock is this?

Septic

Common cause of death in ICU's (40% mortality). What type of shock is this?

Cardiogenic

Confusion, elevated preload, systemic and pulmonary edema, cyanosis, dyspnea, hypotension. What type of shock is this?

Hypovolemic

Confusion, increased SVR, vasoconstriction, cold, clammy skin, thristy, decreased urinary output, low CO, tachycardia, weak pulse. What type of shock is this?

Septic

Decreased BP, decreased CO, vasodilation, decreased SVR, tachycardia. What type of shock is this?

Neurogenic Shock

Injury or trauma to the nervous system (spinal cord, brain). Nerve impulse to blood vessels impaired, blood vessels remain dilated and blood pressure decreases. What type of shock is this?

Septic

Intervention: antimicrobials, cultures, give fluids. What type of shock is this?

Cardiogenic

Intervention: monitor fluids, give vasopressers, balloon pump or revascularization. What type of shock is this?

Anaphylaxis

Interventions: remove antigen, epinephrine, secure airways, give fluids. What type of shock is this?

Hypovolemic

May be caused by burns, hemorrhaging, dehydration. What type of shock is this?

Cardiogenic Shock

Myocardial Infarction with damage to heart muscle; heart unable to pump effectively. Inadequate cardiac output. Body cells do not receive enough oxygen. What type of shock is this?

Anaphylactic Shock

Results from reaction to substance to which patient is hypersensitive or allergic (allergen extracts, bee sting, medication, food). Outpouring of histamine results in dilation of blood vessels throughout the body. What type of shock is this?

Neurogenic

SVR decreases, blood pools but doesn't leave the body. What type of shock is this?

Hypovolemic Shock

Severe bleeding or loss of body fluid from trauma, burns, surgery, or dehydration from severe nausea and vomiting. Blood pressure decreases, thus blood flow is reduced to cells, tissue, and organs. What type of shock is this?

Cardiogenic

Type of shock with highest mortality rate

Anaphylaxis

Vasodilation, relative hypovolemic, dyspnea, edema, uticaria, hives, anxiousness. What type of shock is this?

Preload

What happens if too much fluid is given during heart failure

MODS (multiple organ dysfunction system)

What is it called when 2 or more organ systems fail?

Cardiac Output

What is low in all types of shock?

Decreased CO

What is the first step of the common pathway of shock?

Septic

What type of shock happens as a result of bacterial infection?

Neurogenic

What type of shock has widespread massive vasodilation?

Septic

What type of shock is most-commonly caused by gram-negative bacteria?
