"Although I concede that racism is much more common against oppressed minorities, it is absurd to suggest that it couldn't possibly ever be directed towards privileged majorities"

10

The Bible says that being racist is an extreme sin.

"The most notorious example of racism by the West has been slavery, particularly the enslavement of Africans"

6

"Racism is the belief in the superiority of one race over another, which often results in discrimination and prejudice towards people based on their race or ethnicity. Today, the use of the term "racism" does not easily fall under a single definition."

1

"Discrimination: treating a person or particular group of people differently, especially in a worse way from the way in which you treat other people, because of their skin colour, sex, sexuality, etc. — Cambridge Dictionary"

10

"In the video, they can be heard shouting "**** white people," "**** Donald Trump," and forcing their victim to say, "I love black people," while crawling on his hands and knees. — Vice"

10

"On one end of the spectrum, PC leftists say there's no such thing as reverse racism because minorities can't be racist. At all. Ever. On the other extreme, alt-righters say racism against oppressed minorities is as bad as racism against privileged majorities and therefore the very categorization of racism into "reverse racism" and "regular racism" is inherently racist because it suggests one may be worse than the other. I'm usually skeptical about such black-and-white statements, so I would like to propose the truth lies somewhere in between."

10

"So as much as you would like to believe that blacks and whites experience offense in the same way, it seems the only reason to believe this is wishful thinking. We want to believe that racism is over. We want things to be simple and colorblind. But they are not. And pretending we're already there when we aren't doesn't do any good. After all, the first step to solving a problem is acknowledging its existence."

10

"Some people, however, have expressed criticism towards their perception that the media was reluctant to describe the attack as a hate crime and that certain people have played down the seriousness of the crime while they wouldn't have done so it if the races were reversed. Should the outrage really always be the same though?"

"It seems to me that a similar type of self-contextualizing (through race) happened on a grand scale in Asian America as Jeremy Lin took over sports news and much of AA media references last spring. With Lin's rise, there was a feeling, a swelling collective feeling, that we Asians were no different from the other people we see on national TV, almost exclusively white and black. That we were Jeremy Lin, able to play as well as they in "their" arena, the ability of Jeremy Lin pointing to a potential in all of us. The writer Jay Caspian Kang said something to this effect in his Grantland article: "The pride we feel over [Lin's] accomplishments is deeply personal and cuts across discomforting truths that many of us have never discussed. It's why a headline that reads 'Chink in the Armor,' or Jason Whitlock's tweeted joke about 'two inches of pain,' stings with a new intensity. Try to understand, everything said about Jeremy Lin, whether glowing, dismissive, or bigoted, doubles as a referendum on where we, as a people, stand."

"Racism is a doctrine or teaching, without scientific support, that does three things. First, it claims to find racial differences in things like character and intelligence. Second, racism asserts the superiority of one race over another or others. Finally, it seeks to maintain that dominance through a complex system of beliefs, behaviors, use of language and policies. Racism ranges from the individual to the institutional level and reflects and enforces a pervasive view, in white dominated U.S. culture that people of color are inferior to whites."

13

"White skin privilege is not something that white people necessarily do, create or enjoy on purpose. Unlike the more overt individual and institutional manifestations of racism described above, white skin privilege is a transparent preference for whiteness that saturates our society. White skin privilege serves several functions. First, it provides white people with "perks" that we do not earn and that people of color do not enjoy. Second, it creates real advantages for us. White people are immune to a lot of challenges. Finally, white privilege shapes the world in which we live — the way that we navigate and interact with one another and with the world."

"Racism is more about systemic oppression than power as a general term. Without that aspect, I don't think one can really say that other races can be racist to white people. To my knowledge, there isn't a long history of other races trying to keep white people from accessing housing, education, economic stability, and a whole host of other things that should be basic rights. I would really just call that prejudice. "

2

"It wasn't an isolated incident. According to a recent study, there are at least 917 organized hate groups in the United States. The study, based on data collected by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and presented in their annual census of hate groups, looked at the presence of hate groups on Twitter. SPLC found that the number of likes and comments on hate group accounts grew by 900 percent in the last two years."

3

"Because regardless of skin color, it hurts to be categorized; to be seen as just the color of your skin and to be judged solely based on that attribute. Why then is it okay for people of other races to continuously group the white race."

4

"Most people hold the belief that only white people can be racist. This belief is quite hostile, and comes off as, well, racist to onlookers of said race. If people were asked how they would feel if they were thought of in a negative manner "

"An us-them mentality is unfortunately a really basic part of our biology," said Eric Knowles, a psychology professor at New York University who studies prejudice and politics. "There's a lot of evidence that people have an ingrained even evolved tendency toward people who are in our so-called 'in group.'"

7

"In some ways, it's super simple. People learn to be whatever their society and culture teaches them. We often assume that it takes parents actively teaching their kids"

7

"White supremacist groups promote a "siege mentality" among their followers, Knowles said — rhetoric that aims to lend legitimacy to people's racial and ethnic fears. He pointed to the slogans shouted by participants in the Charlottesville rally: "You will not replace us" and "White Lives Matter."

"I think there is blame on both sides," Trump said Tuesday, reverting back to the wording from a statement he made Saturday that pointed blame at counter-protesters as much as white supremacists. "I'm not putting anybody on a moral plane ... I thought what took place was a horrible moment ... but there are two sides."

"The bottom line is that nonwhites tend to see racial discrimination a lot more than whites do. Take a look at these numbers: An overwhelming 87% of black Americans say black people face a lot of discrimination in the United States, but only 49% of white Americans say the same thing, according to a February poll from the Public Religion Research Institute."
