They were starving. They only ate raw cassava and bananas. There only hope was to retrieve money from Mattru Jong that they left behind.

How is the moon significant to Ishmael?

When he was younger he wanted to find out why the moon was appealing. He discovered images of a man's head, a man with an axe chopping wood. and a women holding a baby. He still sees these images there now and it pleases him to know that part of his childhood is with him.
