Choices

Giving the client a choice e.g. "Do you want to _______ or _____?

Nonvocal

Any non-vocal cue e.g. facial expression, body language, expectant looks, gestures, etc.

Rule Governed Behavior

Any rule that client is given to follow such as in a social story or other form.

Visual/Textual

Any visual icon, picture or text that helps the client give the correct response.

Leading Questions/ Statements

Asking questions or giving clients information that will help them think through a process logically

Experiential

Hands on activity that makes the client get up and /or prompts a client to think through an activity. By doing the activity, it will make the client think of everything related to the activity.

Playing Confused

Pretending not to know information about what a child is doing or talking about to get them to be proactive and be more clear in their transfer of information. Adults infer too much information so sometimes playing dumb/confused will force the client to get up and do something, speak more clearly and/or use better vocabulary in the transfer of information.

Role Play

To act or pretend to be someone so that the child can gain practice at an interaction that are learning e.g. "I'm going to pretend to be mom and you tell me how you are going to ask her for something you really want that she doesn't want you to have...."

Rephrasing

To say something in a different way

Model-Observation

To watch another person perform an activity that will teach the client what to say or do in a similar way
