Communication

Is the process of creating and exchanging meaning through symbolic interaction.

Anticipatory

Listener anticipates what the speaker will say then rushes (jumps) ahead to plan a response.

Passive

opposite of active listening mistakenly think they can absorb without contribution often view communication as a one-way process- all responsibility on the speaker view themselves as message receiver only - contribute nothing easily distracted- gives negative nonverbal feedback no rewards- only boredom and apathy

Impatient

short bursts of active listening then zones out spends more time talking fails to assume any responsibility in any discussion if discussion doesn't involve them- they stop focusing forgets details/instructions- don't think important

Defensive

People who take innocent comments as personal attacks.

Active listening

fully participating giving feedback trying to understand/comprehend trying to remember or recall transactional sending/receiving messages asking questions

Combative

happens when we are more interested in promoting our own point of view than in understanding or exploring someone else's view. We either listen for openings to take the floor, or for flaws or weak points we can attack.

Critical

is a form of listening that if usually not mentioned, since it involves analysis, critical thinking and judgment. Making judgments during listening is often considered as a barrier to understand a person, and there's a lot of truth in that.

Appreciative

is a type of listening behavior where the listener seeks certain information which they will appreciate, for example that which helps meet his/her needs and goals. One uses appreciative listening when listening to good music, poetry or maybe even the stirring words of a great leader.
