Simpsons

- 1989-Present) was created by Matt Groening and airs on FOX. It drew inspiration from shows like All In The Family and The Honeymooners. Many of the shows plot points centre around a working-class family trying to keep up with technological and social change o Homer Simpson works for a nuclear plant. In 1979, there was a nuclear accident at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania, and in 1986, Chernobyl in Ukraine exploded. The Simpson's raises questions about nuclear safety, environmental regulations, and unfettered capitalism

Popualr Cutlure Wars

Eminem

- Eminem (Marshall Mathers) succeeded where other white rappers faltered in the 1990s, because he was embraced and mentored by Dr. Dre o Mathers grew up urban and poor, raised by a single mom who struggled to hold down a job - they moved from apartments to housing projects, to relatives' houses § Dropped out of high school at seventeen; failed Grade 9 three times o Mathers' background gave him legitimacy in the rap industry, as did his ability to address his privilege and ask listeners to look past his whiteness - The Slim Shady LP (1999) was produced by Dr. Dre, and moved Eminem into the mainstream; quickly followed by The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) o Albums brought same criticism as Nas/Dr. Dre - references to drug addiction, sexual violence, and mental illness - also homophobia - The Slim Shady LP is described by Mathers as a "cartoonish" horror album o The video for "My Name Is" does make interesting social commentary

- Fantasy films in the post 9/11 era tended to be focused on the concept of good vs evil, tended to simplify things much more than real life - Three films of trilogy released in 2001-2003 - Premise of an absolute evil in Sauron, Orcs o Contrast this with the complicated nature of Afghanistan/Iraq Wars, civilian causalities, and xenophobia - Islam vs Islamic Extremism - The trilogy shows different races (hobbits, dwarves, elves, men) working together to defeat Sauron - metaphor for a untied world post 9/11 - The trilogy helped people to grieve.
