articulations of bony thorax
costochondral union/junction
- Between costal cartilage and ribs (where the cartilage and bone are bound together - Ribs 1-10 - Synarthrodial; no movement
sternoclavicular joint
-Articulation between the clavicle and the sternum -synovial joint -Gliding-Plane motion Diathrodial joint
costovertebral joint
-Diarthrodial -synovial joint between rib head and vertebra -articulates with the head of the rib and vertebral body
sternocostal joint
-Synovial joint between rib cartilage and sternal edge except 1st rib -between rib 2-7 -synovial joint -plane (gliding motion) -diathrodial
sternocostal joint of rib 1
-between the sternum and ribs of rib 1 -cartilage of the rib attaches directly to the manubrium with no synovial capsule -cartilaginous joint -synchondrosis type -no movement
costotransverse joint (posterior articulation)
-joints between the ribs and vertebral column -plane (gliding) -Synovial -Diathrodial -articulate with the tubercle of the rib and transverse process
interchondral joints
continuous border between the costal cartilage of the anterior 6-9th rib -synovial joint -gliding (plane) motion *interchondral joints between the 9th-10th cartilages are not synovial --> classified as fibrous syndesmosis
