Bile Duct System (Lab 5 - The Digestive System)
Common bile duct
carries bile from the liver and gallbladder to the duodenum
Bile ductule
collects bile from bile canaliculi
Left hepatic duct
collects bile from left side of liver (from bile ducts)
Right hepatic duct
collects bile from right side of liver (from bile ducts)
Common hepatic duct
collects bile from the left and right hepatic ducts; exits the liver - formed by the convergence of left and right hepatic ducts - joins with the cystic duct to form the common bile duct
Hepatopancreatic sphincter
controls entry of bile and pancreatic juice from the hepatopancreatic ampulla into the major duodenal papilla
Cystic duct (of gallbladder)
converges with the common hepatic duct to form the common bile duct
Main pancreatic duct
duct that drains pancreatic juices into the major duodenal papilla
Hepatopancreatic ampulla
enlarged space where the common bile duct and main pancreatic duct converge
Head of the pancreas
lies in the C-curve of the duodenum - widest part of the pancreas (wide end of the pancreas)
Body of pancreas
middle portion of the pancreas
Bile duct system
1. Left and right hepatic ducts merge to form a common hepatic duct. 2. Common hepatic and cystic ducts merge to form a common bile duct. 3. Main pancreatic duct merges with common bile duct at the hepatopancreatic ampulla, which extends into the duodenum. 4. Bile and pancreatic juices enter duodenum at the major duodenal papilla.
Major duodenal papilla
rounded projection that collects from the common bile duct and the main pancreatic duct and opens into the duodenum
Bile cannaliculi
small tubes between hepatocytes where bile is collected
Tail of the pancreas
tapered end of the pancreas
