Biology Unit 3 - Biogas production
What are the conditions like in the biogas generator and why?
-Anaerobic conditions (no oxygen) -So that bacteria can grow and break down waste anaerobically (anaerobic decomposition)
Benefits of biogas?
-Methane used for cooking, heating, generating electricity -Fertiliser produced -Get rid of waste -Environmentally friendly
Why might there be CO2 produced in the biogas generator at the start of the process?
-Small amount of oxygen in generator -Bacteria respire aerobically -CO2 produced (until oxygen used up)
Why is warmth needed in the biogas generator?
-So that the bacteria can grow to their optimum level (optimum temp 30 degrees)
What is the process of biogas production?
1. Waste material put in generator 2. Slurry produced from bacteria breaking down waste 3. Biogas released
What makes up biogas?
80% methane CO2 Water vapour Hydrogen
What is biogas production?
Producing biogas in an environmentally friendly way
