BioMed Activity 3.2.6 In Search of Energy
products of cellular respiration
6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP (carbon dioxide, water, and ATP)
what are the products for a hydrolysis reaction
ADP + Pi + energy
It is one of the most efficiently used compounds in nature.
ATP
______ is to cells what gasoline is to your car.
ATP
provides the usable energy needed to carry out all body processes.
ATP
what are the reactants for a hydrolysis reaction
ATP + H2O
what is the equation for the breakdown of ATP
ATP + H2O --> ADP + Pi + energy
what is ADP
Adenosine Diphosphate
where is energy located in a molecule of ATP
Bond between the 2nd and 3rd phosphate group.
reactants of cellular respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 (Glucose and Oxygen)
what is the equation for generating ATP
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP
what happens to CO2 produced by cellular respiration
CO2 = carbon dioxide is released and exits the body when we breathe out.
Identify what foods are considered good energy sources.
Carbohydrates: pasta, rice, bread etc... Glucose is needed to produce ATP, so food sources that contain carbohydrates are necessary.
where does glucose come from for cellular respiration
Glucose, which we get from our food
Name the process human cells use to generate more ATP. Where in the cell does this process occur?
Glycolysis → cytoplasm Aerobic cellular respiration → Mitochondria
What is hydrolysis?
Hydrolysis → "Hydro" = water; "Lysis" = Breakdown; literally means to break down with water. Used to separate the 3rd phosphate group from a molecule of ATP to create ADP.
How is ADP generated?
It is created when the 3rd phosphate group breaks off during the hydrolysis reaction.
which types of cells in the body require the most ATP
Muscle cells (called myocytes) (includes cardiac muscle cells), neurons, and sperm
Name 3 specific body processes that require energy.
Muscle contraction and relaxation Active transport of molecules across membranes; example: Nerve conduction → sodium-potassium pump in neurons.
where does oxygen come from for cellular respiration
O2 = oxygen, is taken in when we breath
what are the 3 components of an ATP molecule
Sugar = Ribose Base = Adenine 3 phosphate groups
what reaction generates ATP and where does it take place
cellular respiration in the mitochondria of the cell
what is ATP used for in the human body?
energy and allows us to do work
what provides us with ATP
food
what type of reaction breaks down ATP
hydrolysis
what is ATO a type of
nucleic acid
