Mediterranean Woodland & Shrub Biome

Cs Climates Oaks and Woody shrubs Temperate biome Hot-dry summers and mild and rainy winters

Boreal Forest Biome

D Climates (Severe Mid-Latitude Climate) Needleleaf/Coniferous forests Low species diversity, no open spaces Taiga=Snow forest Russia has biggest Forest

D- Severe Mid-Latitude Climates

35-70° Latitude Only in North Continental Climate 2 subtypes based on Temperature Short, cool summers Long winters Greatest Annual Temperature Range Can be found in the interior regions of large land masses. Total precipitation is not very high and seasonal temperatures vary widely

Tropical Scrub Biome

A Climates Drier in summer with a small wet season More grasses Less diversity

Tropical Deciduous Forest Biome

A Climates Dry Season Less diversity Leaf shedding in the short dry season. North and South sides of tropical rainforests

Tropical Savanna Biome

A Climates Tall grasses More Seasonality Wet, Dry, and fire seasons Combination of trees and grassland. Home to some xerophytic plants

Desert Biome

B Climates Shrubs, Cactus Wildlife- nocturnal Endemic- home to only one place Xerophytic Plants

Mid-Latitude Deciduous Forest Biome

C Climates Greatest wildlife diversity- mid-latitudes "Disappearing" wildlife

Subtropical Evergreen Forest Biome

C Climates Moist Subtropical Lots of rain, warm to hot summer. Don't shed seasonally l Largely broadleaf, Mixed Evergreen forest as well as Southern pine forest

Mid-Latitude Grass Biome

C Climates Prairies, Steppes, Pampas Rich soil, important agriculture

Humid Subtropical

Cf Most of Southeastern US= Cfa (no dry season, hot summers) Texas- Central and East= Cfa

Marine West-Coast Climate

Cfb and Cfc Cool, moist - mild all year

Mediterranean climate

Cs Seasonality of precipitation= dry summers and Mild, wet winters 2 subtypes based on Summer Temperatures

Tundra Biome

E Climates (Polar) No Trees High latitudes and High elevations Biome of the cold regions of arctic tundra and alpine tundra consisting of grasses, grass like plants, flowering herbs, dark shrubs, mosses and lichens.

Ice sheet climate

Greenland and Antarctica Severely cold Mean temperature below freezing all months Low Precipitation High winds

B- Dry Climates

Less than 10 inches of rain per year Covers more land area than anything else 2 types based on Precipitation (arid and semi-arid) 2nd subtype based on Temperature (Steppe and Desert) Dominant Control= Subtropical Highs (STHs) and Cold ocean currents West Texas and Panhandle (BSh to BWh Climates) Characterized by little rain and a huge daily temperature range. there are two subgroups S - semiarid or steppe and W- arid or desert, are used with the B climates

E- Polar Climates

Poleward of Latitude 70° Coldest summers Small daily temperature range Large annual temperature range Lowest annual Average Extremely dry No evaporation 2 subtypes based on Sumer Temperature Permafrost- Permanently frozen ground

Tropical Rainforest Biome

Selva (describes rainforest) in tropics (A Climates) Amazon Rainforest is the biggest Multi-story Canopy Temperature: Mid to High 80s Lots of Moisture and dense vegetation

C- Mild Mid-Latitude Climates

West coast and 2/3rd of Continental US Temperate Climate 25-40° N Latitude South= mT air dominates most of the year North=mP dominates 3 types based on: Seasonality of Precipitation and Summer temperature Land/water differences play a large part. These climates have warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters

A- Tropical Humid Climates

mT air masses Average Daily Temperature > Annual Range "Night is the season of the tropics" Low latitude, warm, and wet (0-25° latitude) Least Variability in temperature 3 Subtypes based on Temperature Known for their high temperatures year round and for their large amount of year round rain
