artificial eye, may be fitted to wear over a malformed eye or to replace an eyeball

concave lenses

curved inward, nearsightedness (myopia)

convex lenses

curved outward, farsightedness (hyperopia)

slit-lamp opthalmoscopy

diagnostic procedure in which a narrow beam of light is focused onto parts of eye to permit Dr. to examine structures at front of eye

cover test

examination of how the two eyes work together and is used to assess binocular vision, one eye is covered while patient focuses on object

refraction

examination procedure to determine an eye's refractive error, so best lens can be prescribed

opthalmoscopy

funduscopy, examines fundus(back part)

pneumatic retinopexy

gas bubble is injected into the vitreous cavity to put pressure on the area of repair while it heals

lensectomy

general term used to describe the surgical removal of a cataract-clouded lens

tomometry

measurement of intraocular pressure

visual field testing

perimetry, is performed to determine losses in peripheral vision.

mydriatic drops

placed into eyes to produce temporary paralysis forcing pupils to remain dilated even in bright light

fluorescein angiography

radiographic study of blood vessels in the retina of the eye following the injection of fluorescein dye as contrast medium

contact lenses

refractive lenses that float directly on the tear film in front of the eye

enucleation

removal of eyeball leaving muscles intact

vitrectomy

removal of the vitreous humor and its replacement with a clear solution

dilation

uses a focused beam of light to create a hole in the iris of the eye, treats closed angle glaucoma
