Describe the nursing management of a person undergoing orthopedic surgery
Before surgery the nurse obtains a complete medical, drug, and allergy history from the client or a family member. The nurse also assess the clients physical condition and mental status. Help client to experience reduced pain, continue to be active, mobile, and injury free. Practice measures to reduce the potential for post op wound infection. Pg 1142 nursing guidline
Differentiate between closed and open reduction and between internal and external fixation
In closed reduction the bone is restored to its normal position by external manipulation. A bandage, cast, or traction then immbolizes the area. In an open reduction which is performed in the operating room the bone is surgically exposed and realigned. Internal fixation is needed to stabilize the reduced fracture, the surgeon secures the bone with metal screws, plates, rods, nails, or pins. External fixation the surgeon inserts metal pins into the bone or bones from outside the skin surface and then attaches a compression device to the pins.
Discuss the nursing management for client with a cast.

Long arm cast-extends from the upper level of the axillary fold to the proximal palmer crease. Short leg cast-extends from below the knee to the base of the toes. Long leg cast-extends from the junction of the upper and middle third thigh to the base of the toes. Walking cast-a short or long leg cast reinforced for strength Body cast-encircles the trunk Shoulder spica cast-a body cast that encloses the trunk and the shoulder and elbo. Discuss the reason for using splints or braces.
A splint immobilizes and supports an injured body part in a functional position. It does not rigid immobilazation, causes a large degree of swelling, requires special skin treatment. A brace provides support, control movement, and prevents additional injury for more long turn use.
