Chap 11 Myelin Sheath
Nodes of Ranvier
Gaps in the sheath are spaces between cells are called the
Oligodendrocytes in the CNS (formation of mylin sheath)
One per 60 axons, Nodes of Ranvier are further apart. Forms "white matter" of the brain
Schwann cells in the PNS (formation of mylin sheath)
Plasma membrane forms layers around the axon. Nodes of Ranvier are used to increasing the speed of impulse, "jumps" from node to node
Myelin sheath functions
Protect the neuron, Provide insulation, and Increase the speed of impulse transmission
Myelin sheath
The white covering of the axons (dendrites are unmyelinated)
Bigger the nerve
Thicker the sheath
