Permissions

NTFS permissions control access to folders and files through the Windows operating system.

Archive (A)

The A attribute identifies if a file has been modified since the last backup.

Hidden (H)

The H attribute hides a file within the file system so that users who do not have access to its specific filename cannot view or access it.

Read-only (R)

The R attribute marks a file as read-only, meaning that subsequent users cannot alter the file.

System (S)

The S attribute identifies a file as a system file that cannot be deleted.

Compressed

The compression attribute compresses a file to save space on the hard drive.

Encrypted

The encrypted attribute encrypts a file.

Indexing

The index attribute specifies how a file is indexed. Indexing allows a system to quickly locate files using additional extensions assigned by the user.

attrib

Use the attrib command to change or view the attributes of one or more files.

cd

Use the cd command to change the current directory or navigate to another folder. Common switches you can use with cd are:

copy

Use the copy command to copy files from one location to another. Common switches you can use with copy are:

del

Use the del command to delete one or more files on the system. Common switches you can use with del are:

dir

Use the dir command to display a list of files and subdirectories in a directory. Common switches you can use with dir are:

mkdir

Use the md and mkdir commands to create (make) a directory. Common switches used with md are:

rd

Use the rmdir or rd command to remove/delete a directory.

robocopy

Use the robocopy (robust file copy) command to copy entire folder structures between volumes or across a network. The benefit of using robocopy is that all NTFS file permissions and attributes are maintained and interrupted transfers can be resumed. Common switches you can use with robocopy are:

xcopy

Use the xcopy command to copy files and directory trees. Common switches used with xcopy are:
