Expectations we have of ourselves or that others have of us that help to create the conditions that lead us to act in predictable ways
What is the difference between individualistic orientation and collectivistic orientation?
Individualistic orientation is the tendency to stress self or personal goals and achievements over group goals and achievements whereas collectivistic orientation is the tendency to put aside individual goals for the well-being of the group
What are the roles of self-fulfilling prophecy and impression management as they relate to self- concept?

What's the difference between self-concept, self image, and self esteem?
Self-concept (or self-identity) is how we perceive ourselves, which consists of our beliefs and attitudes about self. Self-image is how we see ourselves - our mental pictures about self. Self-esteem is our feelings and attitudes towards ourselves or how we evaluate ourselves. *Self-concept is based on our values (long-lasting ideals that guide our behavior), attitudes (evaluative dipositions, feelings, or positions about oneself) and beliefs (convictions that we hold or confidence in the truth of something that is not based on absolute proof) *Our self-concept deter mines our behavior and the related communication
What is personal-social identity continuum?
The two ways the self can be categorized: at a personal level, in which the uniqueness of the individual is emphasized; and at the social identity level, in which the self is thought of as a member of a group
What is the role of gender in determining self-concept?
Those who understand gender roles are more likely to be successful in their interactions and careers than those who do not -Gender identity, not the biological sex, becomes part of a person's self-concept -Gender stereotyping can affect communication behaviors of both males and females
