coat dress

a heavy dress that usually closes down the front like a coat. However it is worn as the main garment rather than over another garment.

shirtwaist dress

a long semifitted tailored shirt. It is as long as a regular dress and usually has a belt or sash at the waist.

shift/ chemise

also have no waistline seam. straight and loose fitting with no inward shaping at the waist.

tent dresses

are larger and billowy. They hang loosely at the shoulders. They are often worn in hot weather because they do nit hug the body.

Cowl neckline

draped with flowing folds.

empire

dress has a high waistline. Its opposite, the lowered waistline style, has a long torso. Its waistline seam is actually down toward the hips.

A-line

dresses are narrow fitted at the shoulders they have no waistline seam and become wider at the hemline. they are named after 'A' shape of their silhouette.

sheath

dresses have no waistline seam

jewel or round neckline

encircles the base of the neck, is plain and rounded

has a diagonal overlap to one side

lowered waistline style

has a long torso. Its waistline seam is actually down toward the hips.

blouson dress

has bloucy fullness above the waist. It is usually belted. It most often has a fitted skirt.

jumpers and sundress

have a brief bodice often with shoulder straps and a low neckline. May or may not have a waistline seam, and may be fitted or loose at the waist. Made out of heavier fabric and is worn over a blouse or sweater. A sundress is worn in hot weather alone as a dress.

princess dresses

have seam lines going up and down their entire length. The vertical seaming is from shoulder or the armhole.

horseshoe neckline

is high at the neck in the back but goes down like a U in the front.

scoop

neckline is lowered and round. Usually lower in the front than in the back

asymmetrical dress

the right side is different from the left side. If divided by a center line, the two halves are not the same.

jabot

worn on the collar front or going down from the neckline of womens garments as well as mens tuxes
