In what way is the growth of hair and nail similar?

Hair and nails are both a modified type of skin. They are also both made of Keratin and have a PH of 4.5 to 5.5

What organs and tissues make up the integumentary system?

Skin and its related structures--the hair, nails, and a variety of glands--make up the integumentary system.

Compare the structures of the epidermis and the dermis.

The epidermis, outer layer of the skin, has two layers, the outside is made up of dead cells, while the inner layer is made up of living cells, comes in contact with the environment. The dermis, inner layer of the skin, lies under the epidermis and contains collagen fibers, blood vessels, nerve endings, glands, sense organs, smooth muscles and hair follicles.

List the functions of the integumentary system.

The integumentary system serves as a barrier against infection and injury, helps to regulate body temperature, removes waste products from the body, and provides protection against ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

Why does cutting your skin hurt, while cutting your hair or nails does not?

There are no nerves in the hair and nails. Therefore the body has no reaction. The nerves in your skin react to pain, and send a message to your brain.
