Define data warehousing and data marts and explain how they support business decisions.

A data warehouse is a central storage of information. This repository combines all data from all the databases and systems in order to assist in giving access to information. Data warehousing keeps all of a company's data in one place that allows for easy access to information. The ability to see all data easily aids in business decision-making. Smaller data warehouses are known as data marts.

Describe a database, a database management system, and the relational database model.

A database holds onto information about many types of inventory/objects, events/transactions, employees/people, and places. A database management system (DMBS) manages the admission to and the security of a database. Additionally, a DMBS generates, interprets, updates, and deletes data found in a database. A DMBS also contains methods for creating, keeping, retrieving, and updating the data found in a database. A relational database model lets users read data, keep data up to date, and create and delete data found in a relational database.

Identify the advantages of using business intelligence to support managerial decision making.

In most companies the majority of organizational data is only accessible to the MIS department. This makes it difficult for businesses to be aware of their strengths and weaknesses, and who their competitors are. Organizational data includes, structured data in a database, and unstructured data. Examples of unstructured data include: voicemails, phone calls from customers, texts, videos, and tweets. The use of business intelligence systems help to solve the issue of managers being rich in data and poor in information, therefore aiding in managerial decision making.

Explain the four primary traits that determine the value of information.

Information is defined as data that is transformed into a useful and significant context. Information lets an organization know about its performance, and helps estimate how future actions may operate. The four primary traits of information include information type (transactional and analytical), information timelines, information integrity, and the governance of information.

Identify the business advantages of a relational database.

Relational databases have increased flexibility, increased performance, less repeated information, increased information quality, and better information security when compared to spreadsheets or word documents.

Define the three organizational methods for analyzing big data.

The three organizational methods for analyzing big data include data mining, big data analytics, and data visualization. Data mining is the operation of analyzing information to take out data that is not only included in the raw data. Data mining can begin at course granularity (summary information level) and continually progress through levels of detail (drilling down) or the opposite (drilling up). Big data is the gathering of large and complex data sets. These data sets include both structured and unstructured data, which cannot be analyzed through the use of traditional database methods. Lastly, data visualization depicts a technology that lets users see or imagine data in order to transform data into a business viewpoint.
