Hub

Creates a star topology. Functions- send data to hub, hub would send to every single hub. Bottleneck issue because of excessive bandwidth consumption. Can only operate in half duplex mode

SFP

Enables you to change the media type of a port(there is a GBIC as well-but bigger)

Network Bridge

Extend a network(a router treats networks as separate units). A bridge groups them as a family. Uses MAC address.

Servers

File/print servers, application server, directory server, remote access server, web server, DNS server, DHCP server

What is the difference between half-duplex mode and full-duplex mode?

Half duplex can only transmit on it or receive, cannot do both at the same time. Full duplex can do both at the same time.

What are the main differences between a hub and a switch? What makes a switch a better choice for many networks?

Half duplex(hub) and full duplex(switch)

DHCP Server

Listens for workstations to come online and sends request for IP address.

DNS Server

Map difficult to remember IP addresses to easy to remember domain names

MAC Address

Media Access Control Address, 12 character number that identifies each network adapter. The numbers are hexidecimal, separated by dashes or periods. Hard coded into the hardware.

How does DSL provide support for both analog and digital data on the same telephone line?

Switch

Much more efficient, functions, send data to switch. Switch knows which host is connected to each ports of the switch by the MAC address and will send it to ONE host. Can operate full duplex mode

NAS

Network Attached Storage, provides storage and sharing of network files.

Internet Applicances

Provide basic internet access, dedicated device to provide some type of service (ex. VOIP, proxy, content filter, malware scanner)
