austrailia

britain had been using australia as a place to send criminals since the 1700s. but by the mid 1800s more british moved to australia for the gold and copper deposits. in 1901 austrailia was granted self rule by britain, but it still remained a part of britain

canada

britains colonies in canada were very divided, some speaking only french and some speaking only english. rebellions in the canadian colonies convinced british that a reform was necessary. the british sent lord durham to unite the canadian colonies. canada eventually became a self governing colony.

new zealand

british government made an agreement with the local maori people for land in exchange of self rule. new zealand then became a dominion. new zealand also became the first country to give women the right to vote

lord durham

british lord that investigated the problems among colonists in Canada and suggested combining Upper and Lower Canada into the Province of Canada and giving colonists the right to govern themselves.

queen victoria

british queen, under whose rule the British empire reached the height of its wealth and power, forced to accept a new, virtually powerless role after the Chartist movement. time of the victorian era

english writer and early feminist who denied male supremacy and advocated equal education for women

emmeline pankhurst

founded the Women's Social and Political Union in 1903. said that in order to achieve reform "you have to make more noise than anyone else." lead destructive tactics (breaking windows and such) which lead suffragists to prison.

ireland

irish resented the british, even though they were under rule buy them. potato crop failed leading to the potato famine, the great famine swept through ireland killing millions. british blocked food shipments to ireland during the famine, which made irish begin to fight for change. ireland wanted to home rule but was granted only limited self government two decades later.
