Chemistry Substances
Chemical Change
A change that affects the structure or composition of the molecules (NOT ATOMS) that make up a substance, typically turning one substance into another substance with different properties; a result of a chemical reaction
Homogeneous Mixture/Solution
A mixture that had a uniform composition and may contain solids, liquids, or gases.
Mixture
A physical blend of two or more pure substances in any proportion which each substance retains its individual properties. The original substances are able to be separated by physical means
Chemical Property
A property that can only be observed during a chemical reaction. For example, Lithium hydroxide burns red, and iron rusts.
Crystallization
A separation technique that produces pure solid particles of a substance.
distillation
A technique that can be used to physically separate most homogeneous mixtures based on the differences in the boiling points of the substances involved.
Physical Change
A type of change that alters the physical properties of a substances but doesn't alter its composition.
Extensive properties
Physical properties that depend on the amount of present substance.
Intensive Properties
Properties that do not change when some sample is added or taken away.
Pure substance
a form of matter with a uniform and unchanging compisition
Pure Substance
a form of matter with a uniform and unchanging composition.
Heterogeneous Mixture
a mixture that does not have a uniform composition. Some parts are more sense and can be differentiated easily.
luster
how shiny an object is
Filatration
involves passing a liquid through a material with small pores that allow some substance to pass through
Chromatography
involves passing a mixture through a medium in which the components move at different rates
Physical Properties
properties that are visible without a reaction. ex. Mass, density, volume, color, boiling point, solubility, odor.
conductivity
the ability of a substance to allow the of energy or electricity
malleability
the ability of a substance to be beaten into thin sheets
ductility
the ability of a substance to be drawn into thin wires
filtrate
the liquid that passed through the filter paper
evaporation
used to separate a dissolved solid from the liquid in which it is dissolved
