What is a routing table

A set of rules that is used to determine where data packets traveling over an IP network will be detected

What is static routing

When the network admin sets routing tables manually

What are a routers 2 functions

-to deliver a packet to a host that is on one of their connected networks - create routing tables by sharing information with other routers ( this is how they gather info about networks they are not connected to)

What do routers communicate with each other about

-what networks they handle -what other routers they know about - what are the fastest paths

What are the 3 goals of a router

1) have a system for rating a path 2) create a routing table that keeps track of other routers and the networks they handle 3)convergence - have completely updated routing table information after changes occur

What are three ways entries can Happen

1) static- administrator types them in 2) automatic- the connected networks are included by default 3) dynamic- a routing protocol gives info about a remote network

What are hybrid protocols

A mixture of link state and distance vector

What is the hybrid protocols

Eigrp- only works on Cisco

Hop count

How many routers will it hit on the way to the destination

What are the link state routing protocols

Is-is Ospf

What does hybrid do instead of hop count

It looks at bandwidth and how much delay is on a connection

Why is Ospf used most

It's very common and very fast- it opens the shortest path first

Administrative distance rating

Low is good high is bad (it means you closer to the network when it's low)

What does distance vector do

Makes decisions based on how far in which direction

out of RIP, RIPv2, BGP, OSPF which protocol would provide a more flexible means of determining the route used and produce less broadcast traffic

OSPF

if you have a small network and you must configure routing, you decide to use a distance vector protocol, which protocol would you use

RIPv2

Does igp, Bgp, rip, Isis use next hop metric in deciding how to route traffic

Rip uses next hop metric

What are the distance vector protocols

Rip- uses hop count Ripv2- uses hop count is faster than rip Bgp- routes only between autonomous systems I.e. Stand alon networks

What does link state do

Sends out lsa to tell where it is, what is connected, how fast it is .... Routers use lsa I for to build a map of routes

What is the Best rating in a routing table

The lowest administrative distance

what is routing convergence time

Time required by switch ports to update their link status and transition to the forwarding state

what metrics does eirgp use

bandwidth

what is autonomous system

collection of connected IP routing protocols under the control of one or more network operators on behalf of a single administrative entity that presents a common, clearly defined routing policy to the Internet.

packets aer sent to a tc/ip address that can't be located on the lan. However the packets still arrive at their correct destination. what would route these packets towards their destination

default gateway

what metric does rip, and ripv2 use

hop count

which metric is used by RIP version 2 protocol to determine the network path

hop count

what is a disadvantage to routing

it is unresponsive to change

static routing

manually typed in

dynamic routing

when routers talk to other routers and find out what networks they are attached to
