Contour Line Definitions
Shape
A 2-Dimensional area that is defined in some way. While a form as depth, a shape has height and width. Shapes are either geometric or free-form.
Implied Line
A series of points that the viewer's eyes automatically connect. Implied lines are suggested, not real.
Texture
Element of art that refers to how things feel, or look as if they might feel if touched. Texture is perceived by touch and sight. Objects can have rough or smooth textures, and matte or shiny surfaces.
Negative Space
Empty spaces surrounding shapes and forms. The shape and size of the negative spaces affect the interpretation of positive spaces. Negative spaces are also called ground.
Calligraphic Line (Accent line)
Flowing lines made with brush strokes, similar to Oriental writing.
Contour Line
Lines creating boundaries that separate one area from another. They define the edges and surface ridges of an object.
Positive Space
Shapes or forms in 2-Dimensional or 3-Dimensional art. Empty spaces surrounding them are called negative spaces or ground.
