Space Cushion
A safe space margin.
Space Margin
An adequate amount of space between your vehicle and another.
Margin of Safety
Areas of roadway large enough to allow you the space, time, and visibility you need for safe movement at any time.
Assumption
Events that you expect might happen.
Options
Potential options in a driving situation, based on a driver's knowledge, experiences and skills.
Potential Immediate Crash Zone
The area directly in front and to the rear that will likely cause you to crash when potential hazards become real hazards. 0 to 4 seconds ahead.
Visual Lead
The distance you can see ahead of your vehicle; how far down the road you need to look for closed or changed visual signs. 20 to 30 seconds ahead.
Comparison
The examination of similarities and dissimilarities to determine options.
Following Interval
The safe amount of time you should allow when following another vehicle or when being followed. 4 to 8 seconds is minimum.
Choice
The selection of one or more possible options.
Vehicle Reaction Time
The time it takes a vehicle to respond.
Human Perception Time
The total time for a human being to determine his or her options and choose one.
Response Zone
Where immediate risk to your vehicle comes into play; you begin to respond to what you perceive. 8 to 12 seconds ahead.
Visual Control Zone
Where you identify objects/conditions that may require a response or continuous attention; the area which you can see ahead a safely control your vehicle. 12 to 20 seconds ahead.
