What is electrical damping?

It is a method of damping, where a moving coil is wound on an aluminium frame and as the coil moves in the field of the permanent magnet, current is set up in the aluminium frame. The magnetic field produced opposes the magnetic field of the permanent magnet. As a result, the pointer will swing more slowly to its proper position and come to rest with very little oscillation.

Define damping.

It is a method used to bring the pointer of a meter to rest after it has been set in motion. It causes a reduction in the oscillation of the pointer.

What is electromagnetism?

It is the interaction between the magnetic fields of a permanent magnet and the coils of a rotating magnet.

What two things does a basic ohmmeter contain?

A battery and a variable resistor. The battery produces current causing a deflection of the pointer proportional to the external resistance being measured. The variable resistor adjusts the current so that the pointer is at exactly zero. This called zero adjustment.

A great current flowing through the coils and producing a strong magnetic field.

What is a back-off scale on the ohmmeter?

A scale where the resistor values decrease from left to right.

It is an ohmmeter used to measure insulation resistance and other high resistance values, as well as ground, continuity and short circuit testing.
