Read the quote from Charles Dickens's Hard Times and then answer the question that follows. Is it possible, I wonder, that there was any analogy between the case of the Coketown population and the case of the little Gradgrinds? Surely, none of us in our sober senses and acquainted with figures, are to be told at this time of day, that one of the foremost elements in the existence of the Coketown working-people had been for scores of years, deliberately set at nought? That there was any Fancy in them demanding to be brought into healthy existence instead of struggling on in convulsions? That exactly in the ratio as they worked long and monotonously, the craving grew within them for some physical relief—some relaxation, encouraging good humour and good spirits, and giving them a vent—some recognized holiday, though it were but for an honest dance to a stirring band of music—some occasional light pie in which even M'Choakumchild had no finger—which craving must and would be satisfied aright, or must and would inevitably go wrong, until the laws of the Creation were repealed? Read the excerpt of "The Man with the Hoe" by Charles Edward Anson Markham who used the penname Edwin Markham: Bowed by the weight of centuries he leans Upon his hoe and gazes on the ground, The emptiness of ages in his face, And on his back, the burden of the world. Read the excerpt from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens: As soon as the great black velvet pall outside my little window was shot with gray, I got up and went down stairs; every board upon the way, and every crack in every board calling after me, "Stop thief!" and "Get up, Mrs. Joe!" In the pantry, which was far more abundantly supplied than usual, owing to the season, I was very much alarmed by a hare hanging up by the heels, whom I rather thought I caught when my back was half turned, winking. I had no time for verification, no time for selection, no time for anything, for I had no time to spare. I stole some bread, some rind of cheese, about half a jar of mincemeat (which I tied up in my pocket-handkerchief with my last night's slice), some brandy from a stone bottle (which I decanted into a glass bottle I had secretly used for making that intoxicating fluid, Spanish-liquorice-water, up in my room: diluting the stone bottle from a jug in the kitchen cupboard), a meat bone with very little on it, and a beautiful round compact pork pie. Which of the following groups of words creates the strongest imagery in this excerpt?
"black velvet pall," "gray," "beautiful round compact"

"desperate seas"
Read the following poem: "Love's Grave" By George Meredith Mark where the pressing wind shoots javelin-like, Its skeleton shadow on the broad-back'd wave! Here is a fitting spot to dig Love's grave; Here where the ponderous breakers plunge and strike, And dart their hissing tongues high up the sand: In hearing of the ocean, and in sight Of those ribb'd wind-streaks running into white. If I the death of Love had deeply plann'd, I never could have made it half so sure, As by the unblest kisses which upbraid The full-waked sense; or failing that, degrade! 'Tis morning: but no morning can restore What we have forfeited. I see no sin: The wrong is mix'd. In tragic life, God wot, No villain need be! Passions spin the plot: We are betray'd by what is false within. Which of the following phrases in this poem serves as an instance of onomatopoeia?
"hissing tongues"
Read the poem "Unwedded" by Ada Foster Murray: Along her tranquil way she went, The slow, sad course of changeless years, While in her burned her youth unspent, Dulled sometimes by her gentle tears. 5 In richer lives she saw the strange, Sweet urgency of wedded days; In dreams she watched her pale light change, Into the steadfast altar blaze. And, waking, sadly bowed above 10 Her slender vestal flame and wept; Ah, better were the house of love, By blighting fire and tempest swept. Which is an example of imagery?
"pale light"
Read the excerpt of "The Man with the Hoe" by Charles Edward Anson Markham, under the penname Edwin Markham: Bowed by the weight of centuries he leans Upon his hoe and gazes on the ground, The emptiness of ages in his face, And on his back, the burden of the world. Whose was the hand that slanted back this brow? Whose breath blew out the light within this brain? Which of these do we explicitly see in the painting Man with a Hoe?
"this brutal jaw"
Read the following passages. Author 1 There has been an alarming rise in the number of gun deaths and mass shootings in America in recent years, and it is time we rose up as a nation and said, "Enough." While many will say that the solution is to ban firearms from private ownership, the fact of the matter is that most gun owners will never shoot another person. In fact, most of those gun owners who do shoot another person are doing so in self defense. Should we leave these people unarmed? No. The solution is not to ban gun ownership, but to make it easier for people who are mentally sound to legally obtain guns to protect themselves from criminals who obtain guns through illegal channels. We must defend ourselves and our possessions, or we will be overrun with criminals who take advantage of our vulnerability. Author 2 Sadly, a sign of modern times in America is an increase in gun deaths. This cannot go on; we cannot keep burying loved ones and innocent victims when their deaths could easily have been prevented. Many gun deaths are swept under the rug because the shooter is hiding behind a simple phrase: "self defense." In reality, would the shooter have needed to defend him or herself had he or she not been wielding a firearm? And what was he or she defending from? A robbery? Are your possessions truly worth a human life? Regardless of the type of person who was shot, the fact of the matter is that gun ownership gives people the belief that they can take others' lives into their own hands. Even if the other party has a gun, they are less likely to shoot someone who is unarmed. Furthermore, one person with a gun does not result in a shootout. Two people with guns most certainly will, which increases the odds of an innocent bystander being it. So-called "self defense" results in more deaths. The laws surrounding gun ownership must change. Which answer best explains the similarity in the authors' purpose?
Both authors want to inspire the general public to help change gun laws to protect American citizens.
Read this excerpt from the Prologue describing the Pardoner: "He was, in church, a fine ecclesiast [church-goer]. Well could he read a lesson or a story, But best of all he sang an offertory; For he knew well that when that song was sung, Then must he preach, and all with smoothened tongue. To gain some silver, preferably from the crowd; Therefore he sang so merrily and so loud." (Lines 710-716) Which is the best statement of Chaucer's use of figure of speech?
Chaucer uses understatement to demonstrate the Pardoner's greed.
Choose the explanation that best describes Chaucer's use of satire in this excerpt: "Well could he read a lesson or a story, But best of all he sang an offertory; For well he knew that when that song was sung, Then might he preach, and all with polished tongue. To win some silver, as he right well could; Therefore he sang so merrily and so loud" (Lines 711-716)
Chaucer's description focuses on incongruity to create satire.
Read the excerpt from Moby Dick by Herman Melville: Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off-then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. From this passage, what can we best infer about the narrator?
He uses the ocean as a way to escape depression.
While cloth diapers have long been heralded as the environmentally friendly choice for "green" parents, new studies question this theory. While it is true that on a daily basis cloth diapers result in less waste, a recent study revealed that the actual manufacturing of cloth diapers (most of which actually feature an outer layer made of a plastic or vinyl material) could be just as harmful as the disposable diapers that end up in landfills. Which sentence would fit best in this passage?
In comparing cloth and disposable diapers, we will look at the following points: manufacturing, use, disposal, and cost.

Swimming is a great option for staying in shape without putting additional strain on your knees. The water provides enough resistance to make you really work, but also enough buoyancy to keep you from putting any pressure on your joints. Some have said that swimming is the only sport that works every muscle group in your body. Whether that is true or not, you will definitely feel every muscle working as you swim from one end of the pool to the other. What you won't feel is that familiar ache in your knees. What is the most logical inference that can be made from the paragraph?
The audience for this article is people who have a knee injury.
Note: Evidence is fabricated. Consider these pieces of information from an article. Violent crime among teenagers has risen 45% over the last quarter century, and most of those have been with guns. First-person shooter games have steadily increased in popularity among teenage males since the inception of these games. Psychiatrist Amy Pombo says, "There is a clear connection here. Murder among teenagers has been on the rise for the past two decades, as have the sales of violent video games to this same population. You'd be a fool not to make a connection there." Based on these pieces of evidence, what can you conclude about the author's intent?
The author wants to convince the reader that violent video games are at least partially responsible for the rise in violence among teens.
Note: Evidence is fabricated. Consider these pieces of information from an article: The new first-person-shooter video game "Battle Scars" goes on sale December 31st, just in time to ring in the new year playing the best game you will ever own. According to Gamers Anonymous Magazine, this game has "the best graphics yet" in a video game, and "realistic blood and gore." Reviewers on game preview websites have given it 4.96 out of 5 stars—the highest rating for any video game ever. Based on these pieces of evidence, what can you conclude about the author's intent?
The author's intent is to convince the audience to buy this video game.
Read the following passages. Author 1 Although many parents think rap music is just noisy stuff for teenagers, they are wrong; rap music is for all ages. I gave my mom some rap lyrics by a group I like, and she agreed that some of it sounded like songs she used to listen to in the sixties. She actually liked a lot of the lyrics! It opened up a great discussion about some of the topics in the songs. I recommend listening to music with your parents if they say they don't like what you're listening to. You might change their minds. Author 2 Rap music is a genre that spans a variety of sounds and content. Though often considered a type of music intended for a certain group or age bracket, rap lyrics can span generational and cultural divides. In a recent study, adults from age 20 to 80 were given lyrics—some from rap songs, and some not. In only 30% of the cases did participants correctly categorize the rap lyrics as being rap—more often, they were categorized as protest folk songs. Similarly, many of the folk songs were classified by participants as being rap lyrics. While the method of delivery may be different, it seems the content is much the same. Which answer best explains the difference in the authors' conclusions?
The first author concludes that talking about music with your parents can reveal similarities in taste, while the second concludes that the content of rap lyrics and protest song lyrics is very similar.
Read the following passages. Author 1 When considering what to purchase for your friends and family for an upcoming holiday, consider this: Will any store-bought gift mean as much as something homemade? A quick search of a website such as Pinterest will reveal hundreds of crafts that are both easy to do, and easy to personalize for your loved ones. Saving money doesn't have to mean skimping on gifts. Author 2 Arguably, the biggest news topic of the decade has been America's struggling economy. With thousands still out of work this holiday season, more people are turning to bargain hunting, and even more are turning to homemade gifts to stay festive and stay in budget at the same time. Websites like Pinterest can attribute much of their popularity to the growing desire to make rather than to buy. Which answer best explains the difference in the authors' purposes?
The first author is attempting to convince the reader to make gifts, while the second is informing the reader about the surge in people making crafts.
Read the following passages. Author 1 "Butterflies," says Jaime Quintanilla. "Butterflies are by far the most popular." He is sitting in his family's tattoo parlor flipping through his sketch book. When asked why butterflies, he shrugs. "I don't know. Girls like them. Maybe it's the fact that they go from something that most people wouldn't look twice at to something beautiful. People like that idea." Jaime has been doing tattoos in Los Angeles for fifteen years, and he plans on continuing to do them for the next fifty. Author 2 Tattoos are a deeply ingrained part of many societies, past and present. While many cultures have used tattoos as a sign of status, others, like American culture, use them as a method of decoration. Many people get tattoos as a way to commemorate love ones, or to remember an important time. Butterflies are a popular tattoo, both for their beauty and for their symbolism. Which answer best explains the difference in the authors' purposes?
The first author is doing a profile of a single tattoo artist, and the second is giving the history of tattoos.
Read the following passages. Author 1 While chicken and turkey are the most popular poultry in America, we tend to neglect a whole other variety of birds—some exotic and some not—that offer equally delicious flavors. Afraid you won't know what to do with a goose or a pheasant? No fear. Turn to The Joy of Cooking, one of the most famous cookbooks around. Inside, you will find detailed recipes for the myriad ways you can prepare fowl of every shape and size. While some people view this cookbook as old-fashioned, rest assured that this type of cooking is quickly coming back into style, and the adventurous cooker and eater will find The Joy of Cooking to be an invaluable resource. Author 2 Hungry? Starving, rather? Great. Head into the kitchen, pull out your copy of The Joy of Cooking and settle in for six hours of painstakingly preparing and cooking a recipe using ingredients that are impossible to find at your local market. What's that? You don't have the time or the patience to do that? That isn't surprising. Although The Joy of Cooking was once viewed as the quintessential guide to all things food, it should be retired to the vault along with your parachute pants and Model T Ford. Instead, pull out Mary Blakely's 5 Ingredients, 15 Minutes for easy, quick meals that will leave everyone satisfied without taking up precious time you could be spending with your family. Which answer best explains the difference in the authors' purpose?
The first author wants to convince readers to try new foods and use The Joy of Cooking as a guide, while the second wants to convince readers that the modern way of cooking lies in Mary Blakely's cookbook.

Read the poem "A Lynmouth Widow" by Amelia Josephine Burr: He was straight and strong, and his eyes were blue As the summer meeting of sky and sea, And the ruddy cliffs had a colder hue Than flushed his cheek when he married me. 5 We passed the porch where the swallows breed, We left the little brown church behind, And I leaned on his arm, though I had no need, Only to feel him so strong and kind. One thing I never can quite forget; 10 It grips my throat when I try to pray— The keen salt smell of a drying net That hung on the churchyard wall that day. He would have taken a long, long grave— A long, long grave, for he stood so tall ... 15 Oh, God! the crash of a breaking wave, And the smell of the nets on the churchyard wall! From the poem and the title, what can we infer?
The speaker's husband drowned at sea.

Only just as much as you can afford; and then one of these days I will buy something with it. HELMER: But, Nora— NORA: Oh, do! dear Torvald; please, please do! Then I will wrap it up in beautiful gilt paper and hang it on the Christmas Tree. Wouldn't that be fun? HELMER: What are little people called that are always wasting money? NORA: Spendthrifts—I know. Let us do as you suggest, Torvald, and then I shall have time to think what I am most in want of. That is a very sensible plan, isn't it? What purpose do the phrases "Wouldn't that be fun?" and "That's a very sensible plan, isn't it?" serve?
They symbolize Nora's submissiveness to her husband.

Read the following passage. Years ago, of the traditional baby colors of pink and blue, pink was considered to be the most masculine of the two, and therefore reserved for baby boys. In the time since, we as a culture have made a drastic shift in the opposite direction—pink for girls and blue for boys. This is true to the extent that when you enter most baby stores, they are very clearly divided between pink, frilly clothes and toys, and blue, rough-and-tumble clothes and toys. You would be hard-pressed to find clothes in the "girl section" that are anything other than pink or purple, and you would be hard-pressed to find a car or truck toy that has anything but boys on the box. We as a culture have made a decision for our children that certain toys and colors are for girls, and certain toys and colors are for boys. However, are we sending our children a negative message in doing this? What might the effects be if a girl wants to be a mechanic, but only ever sees boys playing with tools and trucks in commercials, and only ever finds dolls in "her" section of the toy store? Which sentence best reflects the author's purpose?
What might the effects be if a girl wants to be a mechanic, but only ever sees boys playing with tools and trucks in commercials, and only ever finds dolls in "her" section of the toy store?

Read the excerpt from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll: "So she sat on, with closed eyes, and half believed herself in Wonderland, though she knew she had but to open them again, and all would change to dull reality—the grass would be only rustling in the wind, and the pool rippling to the waving of the reeds—the rattling teacups would change to tinkling sheep-bells, and the Queen's shrill cries to the voice of the shepherd boy—and the sneeze of the baby, the shriek of the Gryphon would change (she knew) to the confused clamour of the busy farm-yard—while the lowing of the cattle in the distance would take the place of the Mock Turtle's heavy sobs." Which quotation best supports a central idea of the paragraph? The first thing I met was a regiment of the vilest odors that ever assaulted the human nose, and took it by storm. Cologne, with its seven and seventy evil savors, was a posy-bed to it; and the worst of this affliction was, every one had assured me that it was a chronic weakness of all hospitals, and I must bear it. I did, armed with lavender water, with which I so besprinkled myself and premises, that, like my friend Sairy, I was soon known among my patients as "the nurse with the bottle." Having been run over by three excited surgeons, bumped against by migratory coal-hods, water-pails, and small boys, nearly scalded by an avalanche of newly-filled tea-pots, and hopelessly entangled in a knot of colored sisters coming to wash, I progressed by slow stages up stairs and down, till the main hall was reached, and I paused to take breath and a survey. There they were! "our brave boys," as the papers justly call them, for cowards could hardly have been so riddled with shot and shell, so torn and shattered, nor have borne suffering for which we have no name, with an uncomplaining fortitude, which made one glad to cherish each as a brother. —Hospital Sketches by Louisa May Alcott

Which quotation best supports a central idea of the paragraph? As boys going to sea immediately become nautical in speech, walk as if they already had their "sea legs" on, and shiver their timbers on all possible occasions, so I turned military at once, called my dinner my rations, saluted all new comers, and ordered a dress parade that very afternoon. Having reviewed every rag I possessed, I detailed some for picket duty while airing over the fence; some to the sanitary influences of the wash-tub; others to mount guard in the trunk; while the weak and wounded went to the Work-basket Hospital, to be made ready for active service again. To this squad I devoted myself for a week; but all was done, and I had time to get powerfully impatient before the letter came. It did arrive however, and brought a disappointment along with its good will and friendliness, for it told me that the place in the Armory Hospital that I supposed I was to take, was already filled, and a much less desirable one at Hurly-burly House was offered instead. —Hospital Sketches by Louisa May Alcott

Which quotation best supports the central idea of the paragraph? To me the Confederate flag was an object of profound love and passionate devotion. It represented hopes that I thought could never fail, possibilities so glorious that imagination was dazzled. I used to go to the square before sunrise, leading my little boy, trying vainly to make him understand and share in some degree my own enthusiasm, but instead he only busied himself in trying to steal near enough to pounce upon one of the many little birds flitting from spray to spray with happy songs. Approaching the beautiful monument where the statues are so lifelike as to appear real companions, sentient and cognizant of one's presence, I chose always a seat where I could gaze upon the face of Patrick Henry, recalling his stirring words, trying to imagine what he would have thought and said now, and almost daring to wish that soul of fire might come, if only for a moment, to animate the cold form; that the silent lips might speak, the eyes look upward to where the breeze of morning stirred the sacred flag which my own heart saluted. —Memories by Fannie A. Beers

Read the following passage. The ancient Greeks believed that the goddess Athena sprang fully-formed from Zeus's skull, dressed in battle garb. Why do nations differ in their economic development?
Nations differ in their economic development for several reasons. Natural resources can be a blessing and a curse to nations. A countries wealth somewhat has to do with how they use their natural resources. Natural resources can help develop a country and provide wealth by trade. However, when a country depends on its natural resources bad institutions (war, inflation, etc.) can be formed. Where a country is on the map also affects how developed they are. Tropical regions tend to be less wealthy, and therefore less developed, because of the parasitic diseases that thrive in their warm climates. Agriculture productivity in these climates are also lower than in colder climates because diseases aren't killed off annually by a cold winter. Where a country is on the map also affects the opportunity to trade. If an area is near oceans and rivers its costs significantly less to ship materials than if an area is landlocked. As previously mentioned, institutions play a big part in economic development. When a government lets its people have a say the country is usually better off. For example, in America everyone gets an equal opportunity at education. People are allowed to spend their hard-earned money how they wish, which makes them want to work harder so they can enjoy the luxuries of life. In bad institutions a person's money could be taken away, so there is little motivation to do well. All in all, there are several reasons that nations differ in their economic development. It's not just one factor that dooms a country, but a few of them.

When babies are born, their brains are not yet fully developed. This is because if babies were able to process everything going on around them, they would very quickly become overwhelmed. Even with this safeguard, babies can easily be overstimulated by their environment. Because their brains cannot process too much at once, babies' brains do not process everything that their eyes see. That is, in the beginning, babies only see in black and white and certain shapes and colors. Additionally, they can only see things within a certain distance of their face. When things are too far away, or too complicated, they appear only as blurs so that the baby does not get overwhelmed. Therefore, if you have a new brother or sister, do not be offended if he or she does not make eye contact with you. The baby is only trying to adjust to life outside the womb. What can be inferred from this passage?
Black and white things are easier for the brain to process.
Read the excerpt from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens: I had often watched a large dog of ours eating his food; and I now noticed a decided similarity between the dog's way of eating, and the man's. The man took strong sharp sudden bites, just like the dog. He swallowed, or rather snapped up, every mouthful, too soon and too fast; and he looked sideways here and there while he ate, as if he thought there was danger in every direction of somebody's coming to take the pie away. He was altogether too unsettled in his mind over it, to appreciate it comfortably I thought, or to have anybody to dine with him, without making a chop with his jaws at the visitor.
