Civil rights given to individuals with disabilities- focused on stopping discrimination in education, employment, or any other community setting. Required compliance for federal funds.

Architectural Barriers Act of 1968

The ABA requires that facilities designed, built, altered, or leased with funds supplied by the United States Federal Government be accessible to the public. The ABA marks one of the first efforts to ensure that certain federally funded buildings and facilities are designed and constructed to be accessible to people with disabilities.

Reitman v. Mulkey

The Court invalidated Prop 14, which protected the right to discriminate in the sale of residential property, on the grounds that it encouraged discrimination and placed the state in the position of sanctioning and encouraging private discrimination to the extent that it constituted state action under the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment.

Executive order 11063

banned racial and religious discrimination in housing built or purchased with federal aid by JFK in 1962. Had little to no effect.

Stuyvesant Town

"iconic and successful post-war private housing community, 14th -23rd st. and 1st and Ave. C. 80 acres of land. c. 8750 apartments in 35 bldgs. It was championed by Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, who, at the behest of Mayor La Guardia, sought "t induce insurance companies and savings banks to enter the field of large-scale slum clearance"

Gandolfo vs. Hartman

refused to impose a restrictive covenant against individuals of Chinese descent in 1892.

Brown v. Board of Education

1954 - The Supreme Court overruled Plessy v. Ferguson, declared that racially segregated facilities are inherently unequal and ordered all public schools desegregated.

Trafficante v metropolitan life

1972 allowed tenants to sue landlords for discriminatory pricing.

Section 109 of housing community development act.

1974 forbids discrimination in federally funded activities.

Havens Realty Corp v. Coleman

1982 allowed mystery shoppers to help police discrimination.

Shelley v. Kraemer

A 1948 Supreme Court decision that outlawed restrictive covenants on the occupancy of housing developments by African Americans, Asian Americans, and other minorities. Because the Court decision did not actually prohibit racial discrimination in housing, unfair practices against minority groups continued until passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968.

Plessy vs Ferguson

In 1883 the Supreme Court held that the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment did not prohibit private acts of discrimination only government Acts.

Corrigan vs buckley

In 1922 it was a case involving restricted covenants based on race and the Supreme Court dismisses the case validating the use of restrictive covenants.

Executive order 11063

John F Kennedy issued an order that prohibited discrimination in housing wherever federal funds were involved - affected prop sales involving FHA and VA loans and other govt subsidized programs - passed 1962

Prohibits discrimination on the basis of age in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance

Executive order 11246

Prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, national (country of) origin, religion and gender in all federal agencies and organization doing business with the government by Lyndon Johnson 1965.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Provided rights to LEP limited English proficient individuals.

Hurd v Hodge

Restrictive covenants in 1948 Supreme Court ruled that the covenants were unconstitutional.

United States Housing Authority (USHA)

Used to improve housing conditions for low income families in 1937.
