Fetch Decode Execute cycle and embedded systems
Three main parts of the CPU
-The control unit (CU) -The arithmetic logic unit (ALU) -Registers
Cache
A small but extremely fast type of RAM, often located inside of the CPU chip
Explain one function of an embedded system in a washing machine.
An embedded system in a washing machine would be used to control the temperature, water-level or cycle speed/duration.
Give one reason why an embedded system is used
Because they are built on a single printed circuit board, so it is much easier to replace it if it breaks down.
The arithmetic part of the ALU
Deals with arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
The logic part of the ALU
Deals with logic and comparison operations
The ALU
Handles the data processing inside of the CPU
Explain what is meant by an embedded system
It is a computer system that is built into a much larger device. It is designed to carry out specific tasks.
Purpose of a register
Registers are used to hold temporary data while a software program is running.
Role of the CPU
The CPU processes data. It does this by fetching instructions from memory (RAM), decoding then executing the instructions
Give one concern about embedded systems
They need specialist skills to design them as they are so specific to their task.
Register
Type of memory inside of the CPU
Give three examples of embedded systems from your home
Washing machine, television and microwave
The CPU is located...
on the motherboard
