Created by placing a padding material between a lining material and a backing material, with subsequent stitches taken forming small, raised puffs. Two types. Tufting-resembles a diamond pattern. Biscuit tufting-resembles rows of squares. $-mid and upper range.

Created when a base metal is coated by another metal via an electrolytic process. Usually just the lugs, arms, tips and corners.

Pressed paper in sheet form. Supports the lining materials. Helps to conceal the transparency of lower grade fabrics. Polyester batting is more commonly used.

Stained or not the casket surface will be smoothly sanded and varnished.

(Components)Overlay (overthrow or throw)

(Components)Apron (Skirt)

The lining attached to the under surface of the foot panel of the casket and or a component part of the trow which extends downward into the body of the casket.

(Components)Hinge Cover (Hinge Skirt)

The portion of the casket interior covering the hinges that attach the casket cap to the casket body; usually extends from the bottom roll and becomes part of the body lining.

(Backing and Padding)Cotton

Very soft and absorbent. Long used as a padding material.

(Backing and Padding)Excelsior

Wood that has been shredded into spaghetti-like strings. Readily absorbent but have low resiliency and lack of softness. Used a padding in low cost caskets.

Perfection Full Couch

A casket in which the rim (ogee), crown, and pies are formed as one unit and which raises in one piece.

Perfection Half Couch

A casket in which the rim (ogee), crown, and pies are formed as one unit with a transverse cut in the cap, forming a two-piece lid for the casket.

(Interior)Semi-Tailored

A combination of a tailored interior with one of more other styles of interior, for effect.

(Components)Foot Panel

A component part of the casket interior which is inside the foot portion of the cap. No distinction on a full couch casket.

(Components)Head Panel

A component part of the casket interior which is inside the head portion of the cap. No distinction on a full couch casket.

(Components)Cove (roll or puffing)

(Lining)Linen

A fabric made from flax; noted for its strength, coolness, and luster. Has a crisp textile, and distinctive woven appearance. Linen weave is more common and is woven to look like linen and used as a casket lining material.

(Lining)Velvet

A fabric of silk, cotton, and possibly rayon, with a nap, or plush, downy, soft surface texture. $-mid to upper range.

(Lining)Satin

A fabric woven to create a smooth, lustrous face and dull back. Can be made from silk, nylon, rayon, or polyester. Rarely used today. $-low range.

(Interior)Crushed

A form of casket interior created by placing the lining material on a metal form, weights added, the material steamed, and then attached to a suitable upholstery material. Heat treated to retain the shape of the form in which it is placed.

(Covered casket material)Doeskin

A heavy, durable cotton fabric with a short velvety nap on one side. A woven cloth with a suede-like appearance with a nap of less than 1/8 inch

A low luster finish

A process where bare metal is scratched with an abrasive material and then finished until a smooth high gloss is obtained. $-costly

(Metal Caskets)Hammertone Finish

A sprayed finish that has the appearance of small indentations in the metal (as if struck by a ball-peen hammer) the indentations are in the paint and appear as the paint dries.

(Components)Fold (gimp)

A style in which the material is drawn or gathered in a parallel fashion in a multiple needle head sewing process. $-low to mid range

(Wood Finish)Polished Finish

A surface made smooth and glossy, usually by friction; brought to a highly developed, finished, or refined state. Cherry and mahogany are good for polishing. Pecan and oak are less so.

(Lining)Twill Weave

A textile weave in which threads are crossed over one another to give an appearance of diagonal lines. Can be made from any number of raw materials. $-lower range

A thin, crinkled cloth of silk, rayon, cotton, or wool. Very commonly used lining material. $-low to mid range.

(Interior)Tailored

A tightly drawn form of casket interior style. Very plain, simple and dignified. No frills or busy appearance. Very labor intensive. $-Very costly.

(Covered casket material)Broadcloth

A twilled, napped woolen or worsted fabric with a smooth, lustrous face and dense texture; usually made of cotton, silk, rayon,woven in a plain or rib weave with a soft, semi gloss finish.

(Wood Finish)Satin finish

A type of semi-luster or semi-gloss casket finish that is smooth with well defined fine lines or striations.

(Covered casket material)Plush

A woven cloth with a nap exceeding 1/8 inch

(Metal Caskets)Crinkled finish

An exterior casket finish in which the metal is coated with a substance that wrinkles as it dries. Finish is rough and unpleasant.

(Lining)Muslin

Basic, plain-woven cotton fabric. Frequently used in the lining of the Orthodox Jewish casket or "aaron"
