Alexa enabled Cars:

Some Ford, BMW, Mini, Toyota, Lexus and Volkswagon cars will be Alexa enabled by the end of 2019. Making the following year a pivotal year for the relationship between smart speakers and cars.

Called OnStar

The concept of connected vehicles was introduced in 1996 as a high end safety feature on General Motors' Cadillac line. ___________.

In the 20 years since, connected vehicles have evolved to give drivers access to:

"safety, security, navigation, infotainment, diagnostics and remote payment features."

Problems that can occur

1. Connected cars require long development times. Typically, a vehicle's lifecycle is 5 years. The reason this becomes problematic is that new operating systems and applications are constantly changing. 2. New laws dictate connectivity. For example, in Europe, all vehicles must be equipped with eCall, an emergency notification system. The U.S. and other countries are expected to follow suit. 3. In order to supply wider coverage and faster connectivity, most mobile connection providers partner with each other. Negotiating long term partnerships and developing a trust in the performance of the software and apps can have a lot of time restraints and roadblocks. 4. Car dealerships will need to become more tech savvy as they will have to spend more time with their customers showing them the advanced technology in their new vehicles. The dealership model will have to keep pace with these changes, translating into additional investment for training.

Benefits of Connected Cars

1. Mobility management, functions that allow the driver to reach a destination quickly, safely, and in a cost efficient manner (e.g.: Current traffic information, Parking lot or garage assistance, Optimised fuel consumption) 2. Commerce, functions enabling users to purchase good or services while on the go (e.g., fuel, food & beverage, parking, tolls) 3. Vehicle management, functions that aid the driver in reducing operating costs and improving ease of use (e.g., vehicle condition and service reminders, remote operation, transfer of usage data 4. Breakdown prevention, connected to a breakdown service, with a back end algorithm predicting breakdowns and an outbound service intervening via phone, SMS or push notification 5. Safety, functions that warn the driver of external hazards and internal responses of the vehicle to hazards (e.g., emergency breaking, lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, blind spot object identification) 6. Entertainment, functions involving the entertainment of the driver and passengers (e.g., smartphone interface, WLAN hotspot, music, video, Internet, social media, mobile office)

A Further Reduction in Number of Accidents :

: A benefit of V2V connectivity is that it can potentially reduce the number of accidents occurring on our roads. "Vehicles communicating with each other and roadway infrastructures will become more prominent as automakers allow drivers to inform each other about dangerous road conditions or available parking. Volvo Cars and Trucks do this now, but more automakers plan to offer this basic benefit in the future to support safety and convenience."

WLAN

A connected car is a vehicle that is equipped with internet connectivity and, in most cases, a ____________. This enables the car to access data, send data, download software and patches, communicate with other Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and provide WiFi for onboard passengers.

Increased Security:

As with any connected device, concerns will be raised about privacy and security around the data gathered by a connected car. "There will be a lot more focus on privacy and security of these new technologies. The information from the connected car is arguably more sensitive than our credit card information. [It shares information on] where we go, when we go there, when we are home, where we shop and work, where our kids go to school, and what locations we go to at what time," Walter explained.

Safer Vehicles:

Car manufacturers can also use this data to identify any flaws in their engineering and make the necessary improvements. "Automakers and their suppliers will use connected vehicle data to build and design better vehicles."

V2I " Vehicle to Infrastructure ":

The technology captures data generated by the vehicle and provides information about the infrastructure to the driver. The technology communicates information about safety, mobility or environment related conditions

V2V " Vehicle to Vehicle ":

The technology communicates information about speed and position of surrounding vehicles through a wireless exchange of information. The goal is to avoid accidents, ease traffic congestions and have a positive impact on the environment.

V2C " Vehicle to Cloud ":

The technology exchanges information about and for applications of the vehicle with a cloud system. This allows the vehicle to use information from other, though the cloud connected industries like energy, transportation and smart homes.

V2X " Vehicle to Everything ":

The technology interconnects all types of vehicles and infrastructure systems with another. This connectivity includes cars, highways, ships, trains and airplanes.

V2P " Vehicle to Pedestrian ":

The technology senses information about its environment and communicates it to other vehicles, infrastructure and personal mobile devices. This enables the vehicle to communicate with pedestrians and is intended to improve safety and mobility on the road.

Tethered

connections make use of hardware that enables drivers to connect their cars through their smartphones. Uses Bluetooth and gives access to play music through AppleMusic, Spotify or any Music application on the driver's smartphone.

A Rise in V2V Connectivity:

technology allows vehicles to communicate with each other and share information on road safety, speed and driving conditions. This concept can be taken a step further by enabling the vehicle to communicate with sensors and devices in the roadway infrastructure.

Embedded

vehicles utilize a built in antenna and chipset. It has access to Radio Stations.
