Freddie Gray

Freddie Gray was a 25-year-old young man who was killed because of neglect to medical treatment during his arrest. Freddie had had a switchblade in his pocket, but the police were unable to see that until he had been detained, meaning that that wasn't the reason they arrested him. Freddie was arrested because he fled from the poilce one he made eye contact with one of them. The police went after him because he was simply running but did not witness him doing anything illegal. This connects with his skin color as well. I strongly believe that the main reason they decided to run after him, was because he was African American. Freddi suffered from a severe spinal injury and died. He was neglected of his human rights.

How have lives changed since 9/11 and what are lingering affects?

Many of the first responders that survived 9/11 developed cancer. About 2,000 have died from 9/11 related illnesses. I feel like there is a lot of judgement still passed on to those who are from Iraq or Afghanistan, or people who could meet that "look". For example, at an airport, a security member may stop someone who looks afghani. Immediate responses to 9/11 included greater focus on home life and time spent with family, higher church attendance, and increased expressions of patriotism such as the flying of American flags.

Rodney King

Rodney king was a construction worker who was severely beaten almost to death by the LAPD police. He was turned into a writer and activist and a victim of police brutality. He only fled from the police because he did not want to be beaten. He resisted because they had already began beating him and handling him wrongly after they told him to get onto the ground. Rodney got up in an attempt to run but the continued to beat him with deadly weapons. The white men who beat him plead not guilty.

Trayvon Martin

Trayvon Martin was a 17 year old young man who was shot George Zimmerman. This case is important because it represent that there is no justice for many African Americans. Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges in 2013. Trayvon was walking in a hoodies in Florida, while talking on the phone with his girlfriend, when Zimmerman called the police reporting someone who "looked suspicious". The 911 operator told him to remain in his car but he failed to obey and shot Trayvon. It was because of Trayvon's skin color that he was killed that day. "When they see us", they see trouble or a threat.
