Hunger Games Chapter 3
What does Madge give Katniss?
A gold mockingjay pin she was wearing earlier as her district token.
What form of transportation will take Katniss and Peeta to the Capitol?
A high-speed Capitol model train (that travels an average of 250 mph).
What is the Capitol forcing these children to become?
Basically, they are treating them (and the district citizens) like animals--not real human beings.
How does Katniss normally travel? (p. 40)
By foot
What happens to Haymitch at the end of Chapter 3?
He gets very drunk, stumbles into the dining compartment of the train where Peeta, Katniss, and Effie are, and vomits all over the expensive carpet. He then falls right into the pool of vomit.
p. 38) What does the baker (Peeta's father) promise Katniss?
He'll make sure Prim is being fed and he'll look out for her.
(p. 43) Who does the mockingjay pin remind Katniss of and why?
Her father; because he loved to sing and when he did, the mockingjays would mimic his song and sing it-- they only sang music they enjoyed or liked. He liked mockingjays and they liked his voice.
(p. 46) Why is the mentor important during the games? The mentor is your "lifeline to the world" during the Games. What is his job?
His/her job is to advise you, line up sponsors, dictate the presentation of any gifts during the Games. They could make the difference between life or death for the tribute.
Who comes to say goodbye to Katniss? (List all)
Katniss's mother (Mrs. Everdeen), Prim (her sister), Gale Hawthorne, Madge Undersee, and Peeta's father the baker-Mr. Mellark.
List all the "gifts" Katniss receives and by whom they were given.
Peeta's father gives Katniss a bag of cookies from the bakery and she receives a gold mockingjay pin as a token from her district from Madge (as well as a kiss on the cheek from Madge).
(p. 41) Who is Johanna Mason? A tribute from district 7 a few years ago. What was her strategy in the Games?
She appeared weak and helpless, so she was no threat to the other tributes. Then, when most of them had killed each other off, she showed her true colors of being a vicious killer and won the games.
Why does Katniss refuse to show any emotion? Why doesn't Katniss want to get close to any of the tributes, including Peeta?
She does not want to appear to be weak in front of the cameras. She knows the other tributes will be watching, as well as potential sponsors, so she wants to appear as strong and tough as possible.
Why is it ironic that Effie calls district 12 barbaric?
She is a Capitol citizen and the Games themselves are truly barbaric. Because she buys into them as forms of entertainment, she fails to see them as barbaric, and therefore labels the second class citizens as barbarians, not those who actually create the Games and keep them going.
(p. 36) Why does Katniss know she can't win?
The competition will be far beyond her abilities, she feels. She knows that other kids have trained their entire lives for this and are twice the size of her.
Why can't Katniss let herself cry?
There will be cameras and she doesn't want to seem weak to the viewers.
What makes us (humans) different from animals? (This is a discussion question, not found in book; so answers will vary)
You should somehow come to the conclusion that humans are able to rationalize, use advanced language, find humor, invent things, have moral and ethical dilemmas, etc.
How would you feel if Haymitch was your mentor?
Your answers may vary, but most people might feel a little scared that Haymitch would be their mentor.
