indexing rules

After finding all the MeSH terms correctly describing the content of an article, the indexer must also weigh the importance of these terms. For example, an article describing kinetics of lactate dehydrogenase, will be indexed with both LACTATE DEHYDROGENASE and KINETICS. However, the main point of this article is LACTATE DEHYDROGENASE, while KINETICS is simply a minor point, which further specifies what is happening with LACTATE DEHYDROGENASE. This distinction between the main and minor points of the article is designated as IM for the main point, and NIM for the minor point. The origin of the designation IM and NIM comes from the time when terms describing major points of the article were printed in Index Medicus. IM meant printed in Index Medicus and NIM meant not printed in Index Medicus. IM terms are the main point of the article, while NIM terms are secondary terms supporting the major points of the article. IM concepts are designated by an asterisk (*).

Do you consider yourself more of a team player or an individual contributor?

Don't be too candid when answering this question. Most interviewers are looking for someone who can perform on a team and still work autonomously when needed. The best answer will discuss your ability to do both, even if you have a clear preference. As always, keep the job description in mind. If the description stresses teamwork, that's what you'll want to emphasize in your answer.

TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF

I AM A RECENT GRADUATE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND BALTIMORE COUNTY WITH A STRONG PUBLIC HEALTH AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS BACKGROUND IN THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY. IN THE PAST SEVEN YEAR I'VE GAINED PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE WORKING ON A CONTRACT POSITION AS A RESEARCH ASSISTANT FOR USDA. IN ADDITION, I ALSO HAVE PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AT THE STATE LEVEL AS AN INTERN FOR THE MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH and in the private sector for Beacon health options as a clinical peer advisor specialist. I'M NOW READY FOR MORE CHALLENGING ASSIGNMENTS IN MY CAREER AND THIS POSITION REALLY EXCITES ME TO WORK FOR A WELL-KNOWN INTSITUITION SUCH AS THE NLM.

WHY DO YOU WANT TO WORK FOR US

I HAVE ALWAYS ADMIRED NLM's IMPROVEMENT IN THE PUBLIC ACCESS TO HEALTH INFORMATION AND DEVELOPING NATIONAL PROGRAMS AND COLLABORATIONS TO ACHIEVE THESE GOALS. I REALLY FEEL THAT NLM IS AN ORGANIZATION IN WHICH I COULD EXCEL AND CONTRIBUTE MY PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

NLM is focused on creating a diverse and inclusive work environment. As part of that commitment we will ask you a question about diversity. As part of your interview preparation, we invite you to think about the question, "How will you support and improve diversity at NLM?"

I will support and improve diversity at NLM by learning about the similarities and differences of others and how that positively contribute to the mission of NLM. Immigrating from Ghana to the United States showed me the importance of diversity in the academic and professional realm. Being able to speak two languages and the importance of diversity has helped me to engage more thoroughly in my academic and professional. For example, during my undergraduate education, I notice the importance of diversity during group projects. The diversity in our group including the participants, ideas, and contribution to the project enabled us to complete the successfully complete the project. In addition to resolving issues and concerns when they arise. Explain the value of honoring diverse cultures and learning from others. A team is only effective if everyone feels included. Emphasize that everyone has special talents and gifts to share. Discussing inclusion speaks to diversity, but it also hits on teamwork. Employers are looking for team players and are seeking people who work well together. Combining teamwork and inclusion will make you a desirable candidate. I believe that learning about the similarities and differences of others creates a team that communicates at a high level. I work hard to develop relationships with others so that I can truly understand who they are as individuals. This helps me know how best we can work together. If possible, give specific examples of how you have developed your diversity skills. Be sure to include diversity training, studying or traveling abroad, hosting an exchange student or being a member of a diverse organization. If you speak a second language or have any relevant skills, this is the time to share them. An employer will be impressed with solid evidence showing you understand and appreciate diversity.

MEDLINE indexers

MEDLINE indexers describe the content of biomedical articles by assigning subject terms to them. These subject terms are selected from the controlled vocabulary, Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). The MeSH terms assigned to an article appear on the bibliographic citation in PUBMED. They can be used in PUBMED searches and retrieval . The MeSH controlled vocabulary, developed at NLM, contains over 27,000 terms covering life sciences, medicine, as well as many other areas. MeSH vocabulary reflects the progress in biomedical sciences. Every year, several hundred new terms are added to the MeSH vocabulary, and some existing terms are modified. In addition to the MeSH descriptors, MEDLINE indexers also use 79 topical subheadings or qualifiers.

PUBMED/MEDLINE

MEDLINE indexers index more than 850,000 articles each year for inclusion into Pubmed/MEDLINE the largest bibliographic data base in the world.

MESH 2

MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) is the controlled vocabulary of terms organized hierarchically into 16 trees. Each tree is assigned a letter as an identifier.

MeSH

MeSH is the National Library of Medicine's controlled vocabulary thesaurus. It consists of sets of terms arranged in a hierarchical structure that permits searching at various levels of specificity. The MeSH vocabulary is organized into a series of trees.

Tell me about a time when you failed.

Nobody likes to talk about failures -- especially in a high-stakes job interview when you're being judged by a stranger. However, your ability to discuss failure gracefully can go a long way in demonstrating your honesty and ability to learn from your mistakes. This question also helps the interviewer see that you can take calculated risks and learn from your mistakes. The key is to choose a failure that doesn't reveal any serious mistakes or unprofessional behavior that could raise concerns about your qualifications for the job. Pick a project or initiative that failed due to a combination of factors (not just your actions) and identify something that you learned from the experience. Ideally, your failure story will also showcase some of your positive qualities (initiative, calm under pressure, diplomacy, persistence). Practice this question in an interview

INDEXING PROCESS

ntroduction Read carefully and understand the title. Read the introduction down to the point where the author states the purpose of his article and correlate it with the title. Absorb but do not necessarily attempt to index the introductory material since this is usually a statement of known facts upon which the present study is based. Scan the body of the article, focus on the Materials & Methods section and the Results section. Note section headings, paragraph headings; italics, boldface; charts, plates, tables, illustrations; laboratory methods, case reports, etc. Headings supplied by the author usually herald the content of the section headed. Select for indexing only those subjects actually discussed as opposed to those subjects merely mentioned (and of little or no value in retrieval). Read the summary or conclusions of the author to determine whether he achieved the aims set forth in his stated purpose. Weigh conclusions based on the text but do not index implications or suggested future applications. Do not index conclusive statements not supported by discussion in the text. Scan the abstract, if there, for items missed in indexing, being careful, however, to locate actual discussions within the text of the article; ignore mere implications. Scan the author's own indexing if supplied or the keywords supplied by the publisher to see whether the concepts chosen are actually discussed in the text and if they have been indexed. Scan the bibliographic references supplied by the author for clues and further corroboration.
