Xylem

Responsible for transporting water necessary for photosynthesis

What triggers the leafs to fall?

1) in autumn, days shorten and intensity of sunlight declines 2) The veins in leaves gradually close off as a layer of cells forms at the base of each leaf. 3) The leaf is ready to fall

Petiole

A thin stalk that connects the blade of the leaf to the plant's stem

Blade

A thin, flat part of the leaf that extends off the end of the petiole (photosynthesis occurs here).

Carotenoids

Any of a class of highly unsaturated yellow to orange and brown pigments occurring in plants

Pigment

Any substance whose presence in plant or animal tissues produces a characteristic color. Biological pigments include plant pigments and flower pigments

Tannins

Brown (plants)

Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is the pigment which gives plants its green color and is responsible for absorption of light, allowing photosynthesis to occur.

Why do Leaves change?

During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. The trees will rest, and live off the food they stored during the summer

Deciduous Trees

Having leaves that fall off or are shed seasonally to avoid adverse weather conditions such as cold or drought

Why are leaves green?

Leaves are green because of a pigment known as chlorophyll. The chlorophyll masks the colors of any other pigments in the leaf cells. In the autumn, chlorophyll breaks down revealing other colors present in the leaf.

Leaf

The leaf is a part of the plant that makes food 99% of photosynthesis is done here (photosynthetic organ) 6H2O+ 6CO2 —> C6H12O6 +6O2

Anthocyanins

The most important of the visible plant pigments, responsible for the reds, purples, and blues you see in plants

Pholem

Transports food from the leaf to all parts of the plant

Hardwood species

Types: Oaks, Hickories, Ash, Maples, Aspen, Birch, Cottonwood Trees that lose their leaves in autumn; also refers to the wood produced by these trees The most predominant type of tree in the deciduous forest
