Limiting Factors to Population
Limiting Factors
A factor that causes population growth to decrease (get smaller).
Density dependent limiting factors
A limiting factor that depends on population size. They become limiting when the number of individuals reach a certain number. This only occurs in large and densely populated areas.
Human Activities
Building dams and cutting down the rainforest.
Examples of limiting factors
Competition, Predation, Parasitism and disease, Drought and other climate changes, and Human disturbances.
Examples of density dependent limiting factors
Competition, predation, parasitism, and disease.
Unusual weather
Drought and flooding.
Natural disasters
Earthquakes and the black plague.
Predator
Eats other individuals.
Seasonal Cycles
Extreme heat and severe frost.
Prey
Gets eaten by other individuals.
If the Lynx population disappears, what would happen to the rabbit population?
Increase.
Density independent limiting factors
Limiting factors that affect ALL populations, regardless of size.
Predator-Prey relationship
One of the best ways to control population.
Competition is
Other individuals in a species.
Examples of density independent limiting factors
Unusual Weather, natural disasters, seasonal cycles, and human activities.
