Butler is a very greedy man who is an opportunist. He used to work for everything he had , and once he sold his first piece of land, greed overtook him and he only wanted more money. Haskins is a very humble man who works for everything he has. In the story the author describes how Haskins works like a fiend.
What does Council mean when he says, "Don't want any pay. My religion ain't run on such business principles"?
He means that the work he did, he didn't do to ge paid, he helped out of the kindness of his heart. He is being selfless

He was mad because Butler had raised the price, and in his rage he was prepared to kill him. I think he thought he is getting what he deserves
