Haskins is a very humble man who works for everything he has. In the story the author describes how Haskins works like a fiend.

He means that the work he did, he didn't do to ge paid, he helped out of the kindness of his heart. He is being selfless

He was mad because Butler had raised the price, and in his rage he was prepared to kill him. I think he thought he is getting what he deserves

Under the lions paw means that someone is struggling. In the story, Haskins struggled with butler and his land the entire time. Butler has his hand (paw) on Haskins the entire story
