The Silver Mine by Selma Lagerlof (short story)

Characters - king gustaf- a traveler who want to be rish and is greedy for fame Theme - you do not need money or fame in oder to succeed in life and have a good life. Summary - King Gustaf III was traveling through Dalecarlia during this short story. The king was coming through and his carriage broke down. Then he talked to a paster and told him about a story describin g how they could of been rich but ended up being poor. The king asked why they didnt take adavatntage of the weath but instead of helping it hurt people immensely. Many of the friends died to to murder of suicide. The king became confised and frustrated so he left.

Dr. Heidegger's Experiment

Characters - Dr Heiddegerr- an old doctor who was interested in leaning about hipocraties books. Mr medburne- was a mergent who lost everything and no no better than a little mendicant. Killigrew- had not lived his life well at a young age and in his older years was filled with illness. Theme - Learn from past mistakes, and youth is not necessarily better than age. Summary - Dr heidegger was a docror who was into magic like things. He was supposed to mary a young women 50 years prior. He has some mental inssues and was tkaing medicine, the women took by accodent a pill which killed her the night before the wedding. Years later a women walked into his office to find the women ,he was supposed to mary, come out of the picture and a voice yelled, forbear! Then others came and asked doctor to be youg again. He gve them a drink and told them to drink the water of the fountain of youth. Once they did they became young again. They start to ask different. As time goes on the medicine wears off and instead of learnign their lesson the went to try to find the fountain of youth. There are some reasons why we might think this could be abiguaous. It sould have been that the water he gave them made them fill young again and through that they may thinks they are young.

Beauty and the Beast by Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve (fairytale)

Characters - beauty- very gentle and understanding yet wants her way at times and the beast- bitter and wants to keep the beauty and is wishing for his old self back again Theme - don't trust appearances because it may not resemble their heart Summary - A family lost everything, the father got a message that his ship came and so he went to go check it out. All of the children except for beauty. He asked for the kids to tell him what they want back. But the cargo only paid for the wages of the cargo. He did not make any profit. Beauty asked for a rose, but on his way hom he got lost and ended up in a palace and found a rose there which angers the beast because he thinks he is stealing from him and get very offended. The beast tell the merchent in order for him to make up for this he has to bring his daughter to live there. The beast and beauty end up falling in love and get married.

Figurative Language example - Hyperbole- I scattered seed enough to plant the pland, in rows from Canada to Mexioco. Theme - Racial Iniqualaties Summary -They children were working in feilds they have never worked in resulting and bitterness for two ideas... bitterness in their hearts but also bitterness of the fruit. He is afraid the grain will be taken and that the year will be filled with a lack of harvest and no success. He is a very hard worker trying to provide for any circumstance. He is trying to make a better life for his children because he known that the society is going to make life hard for his children. His children were working very hard and still were eating off bitter food

When You Are Old by William Butler Yeats (poem)

Figurative Language example- personification is - "how love fled adn placed upon the mountains overhead and hid his face amid a crowd of stars." Theme - personification is - "how love fled adn placed upon the mountains overhead and hid his face amid a crowd of stars." Summary- When a person is old they are going to look back to the times when they were young and see what it used to look like. In thi poem he is saying to take a moment to take time to think about the time you were young. She is looking at a book looking back to what she used to be. She is very happy, graceful, very pretty, and talked about the men, one impertectualar, who had a true love for her. He loved her for her character adn the sorrow of her chagning face meaning he loves to watch her grow old. The man did not get to stay with her because he had died.

Worldview - Christian worldview Theme - that for a Christian death is not somthing to fear, The big theme here is the love of God , even in death God loves us. Summary - The poem end and begins in the same thing. It is telling us and showing us that death is not bad. Death for some is a relief. Some of the example- a simile "That broke like a clap of thunder."Wiped away her tears"- revelation 21." Death took her up like a baby. " "she saw death coming like a falling star"- simile, there was also repetition.

Worldview - worldy world view Theme - father to fight and struggle against death. Summary - His message to his father was to fight until death, but he kew that death is death and wants it to happen. People know that death is coming and that that is just the way of life. This story was told from a wordly view. He is asking his father to fight and struggle against death. The author discripes different types of men.
