Asexual

A reproductive process that involves only one "parent" to produce offspring that are identical to the "parent."

Sexual

A reproductive process that involves two parents. Genetic material from these two parents combines to make an offspring that is similar to (but different from) both parents.

Response

An action or behavior performed by an organism as a reaction to a stimulus (can be an action or a behavior).

Heterotrophs

An organism that obtains energy by eating other organisms or their by-products. All animals.

Stimulus

Any change in an organisms surroundings that will cause the organism to react. Example, using a can opener (the stimulus) causes a cat to come running (the response or reaction to the stimulus).

Organism

Any living thing.

Family

Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, ___________, Genus, Species

Fungi

Multicellular, absorbs food (heterotrophs), examples include mushrooms, mold, mildew, yeast. These organisms can be made of single cells or many cells. Because they cannot make their own food, these organisms must get their energy by feeding on other living or dead organisms.

Plant

Multicellular, cell walls, photosynthesis. All organisms in this kingdom are made of many cells surrounded by a cell wall. They are all autotrophs, and make their own food through photosynthesis.

Animal

Multicellular, heterotrophs, and we move. Organisms in this kingdom are made of many cells that are not surrounded by a cell wall. These organisms are heterotrophs, and get their energy from eating other organisms.

Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species

Name the levels of classification of organisms from broadest to most specific.

Monera

One cell without a nucleus, they make their own food, obtain food, thaw are bacteria. All bacteria belong to this kingdom. Bacteria are single-celled organisms, but some can make their own food w/out sunlight - chemical compounds.

Protist

One cell, a nucleus, make their own food, some obtain food, examples are algae, paramecium, amoeba, cilia, flagella. Members of this kingdom are one-celled organisms or simple many-celled organisms. The cells of these organisms contain a nucleus. Some feed on other organisms and others are capable of making their own food through photosynthesis.

Kingdoms

Organisms are placed into _______________ based on their ability to make food and the number of cells in their body.

Autotrophs

Organisms that are able to make their own food through photosynthesis using energy from the sun; such as trees, flowers, moss, tomatoes, dandelions, etc.

Kingdom

The broadest level of classification with the greatest number of organisms.

Species

The most specific group (smallest group) of organisms consisting of all the animals of the same type, who are able to breed and produce young of the same kind.

Scientific Name

The name given to each species, consisting of its genus and its species label. Example, Canis lupus is a wolf.

Development

The process that occurs in the life of an organism that results in the organism becoming more complex.

Growth

The process whereby an organism becomes larger or gets bigger.

Taxonomy

The study of how scientists classify organisms. A system of categorizing organisms (living things) based on shared, observable, characteristics.

Protist Kingdom

To which Kingdom do amoeba and paramecium belong?

Monera Kingdom

To which Kingdom do bacteria belong?

Animal Kingdom

To which Kingdom do dogs, flies, people, rabbits, birds, worms, fish and lizards belong?

Fungi Kingdom

To which Kingdom do mushrooms, molds, mildew, and yeast belong?

Plant Kingdom

To which Kingdom do trees, flowers, moss, tomatoes, and dandelions belong?

1. They use energy 2. They respond to stimuli 3. They reproduce 4. They grow and develop 5. They are made up of one or more organized cell

What are the Five Characteristics of Living Things?

1. Plant 2. Animal 3. Fungi 4. Protist 5. Monera
