3/3 - 2/3 =

1/3

What is 15/4 as a mixed number?

15/4 is read as 15 divided by 4, so 15/4 is equal to 3 3/4.

improper fraction

a fraction with a numerator equal to or larger than the denominator; 2/2 is an improper fraction 7/2 is also an improper fraction

What fractions are equal to 1?

any fraction with the same numberator AND denominator is EQUAL to 1; 2/2, 71/71, 5/5, 20/20, etc. are ALL equal to 1. REMEMBER a fraction is a division problem so if you divide 2 by 2 you get a quotient of 1.

common denominator

when two fractions have the same denominator, we say they have common denominators; to add or subtract fractions, you must have common denominators; also called like denominators

How do I find the least common multiple of two fractions?

if you have the fractions 3/4 and 5/6, to find the LCM you must list the multiples of each denominator; the multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, etc.; the multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, etc.; the LCM of 4 and 6 is 12

What is the LCM of 2/3 and 3/5?

list multiples of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21,etc. list multiples of 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, etc. the lowest multiple they have in common is 15, so the LCM of 3 and 5 is 15

How do I make equivalent fractions?

multiply or divide a fraction by another fraction that is equal to 1; for example, 3/4 x 2/2 = 6/8

fraction bar

separates the numerator from the denominator; also called a division bar

proper fraction

a fraction written so that the numerator is smaller than the denominator

fraction

a term used to describe part of a whole or part of a set; written with a number above a fraction bar and one below the fraction bar

mixed number

a whole number and a fraction; 2 4/5 is a mixed number

least common denominator

also called LCD; this is the lowest or smallest denominator fractions have in common

least common multiple

also called LCM; this used to find the a common denominator for fractions with unlike denominators

equivalent fractions

fractions that are equal; example: 2/3 is equivalent to 4/6

unlike denominators

fractions that do not have the same (or like) denominators; 3/4 and 5/6 have unlike denominators

2/3 + 3/4 =

get a common denominator of 12 so that 2/3 = 8/12 and 3/4 = 9/12. when the numerators are added you get 17/12 which is an improper fraction 1 5/12

What is the LCM of 1/2 and 1/19?

the LCM of 2 and 19 is 38

What is the LCM of 1/7 and 2/3?

the LCM of 7 and 3 is 21

What is the LCM of 8/9 and 1/3?

the LCM of 9 and 3 is 9

denominator

the bottom number in a fraction; the number telling how many parts make the whole

How do I change 9/5 to a mixed number?

the fraction is read as 9 divided by 5, so when 9 is divided by 5 the quotient is 1 with a remainder of 4. The quotient 1 becomes the whole number, the remainder 4 becomes the numerator of the new fraction and the divisor 5 becomes the denominator. (the denominator remains the same)

numerator

the top number in a fraction; the number telling how many parts are shaded

simplify

this means to make a fraction's numerator and denominator smaller by dividing; also called reduce or lowest terms

2/10 + 3/5 =

to solve this problem you must have common denominators; leave 2/10 the same but change 3/5 to 6/10, the add the numerators 2/10 + 6/10 = 8/10 or 4/5 (reduced form)

2/6 + 1/8 =

use the common denominator 24 so that 2/6 = 8/24 and 1/8 = 3/24. when the numerators are added you get 11/24

whole

word telling how many pieces or parts make one shape or group

5/12 - 3/12 =

2/12 or 1/6

7/12 - 5/12 =

2/12 or 1/6

5/6 - 3/6 =

2/6 or 1/3

7/8 - 5/8 =

2/8 or 1/4

17/20 + 3/20 =

20/20 or 1

1/4 + 2/4 =

3/4; when you add fractions, the denominators must be alike; then add the numerators only

11/18 - 7/8 =

4/8 or 1/2

3/8 + 1/8 =

4/8, which when reduced equals 1/2

6/7 - 1/7 =

5/7

2/8 + 3/8 =

5/8

What is 7/3 as a mixed number?

7/3 is equivalent to 2 1/3 when it is written as a mixed number.

6/15 + 3/15 =

9/15, which when reduced is 3/5
