Median

the middle number of a data set

Statistics

the process of collecting, organizing, and interpreting data

What is the range of the following data set: 5, 9, 8, 7, 4

5

Find the median in the following data set: 5, 9, 8, 7, 4

7

Find the mode of the following data set: 8,9, 0, 5, 6, 8

8

If you have two middle numbers in a set of data, what do you do to find the median?

Add them together and divide by 2.

Find the mode in the following data set: 5, 4, 9, 34,98, 3

No Mode

The first step one ALWAYS performs when working with data?

Order the data values from least to greatest.

Mean

The average of a set of data.

Range

The difference between the highest value and lowest value in a data set.

Median

The middlemost number in a set of data.

Mode

The value that appears MOST often in a data set.

Statistical question

a question that must be answered with data. The more data you gather, the more information you have. The data that is collected will vary in value (they will not be all the same). These types of questions anticipate (expect) variability in the data (information) used to answer the question. The smaller the variability however, the better the question.

Mean

average or norm. Think about dividing/distributing so that its a "fair share.

Raw data

data that has not been organized for use or interpretation

Mode

data value that appears most often or most frequently

Numerical Data

data values that are countable or measurable such as temperature or the amount of students in a classroom.

Categorical Data

data values that represent categories or attributes such as area codes or colored eyes people have.

Data

is a collection of information. Data involves more than one number or value (each value or number is often referred to as a Data Value or Data Point).

spread

refers to distribution of its data values. The spread describes how far apart the data is. It could also be thought of as the variability within the data

Frequency

refers to how often something occurs or appears

interval

refers to the degree of variability of each value in the data set (1's, 5's, 10's, etc.)

scale

refers to where you started and ended the number line

shape

the data describes how the data looks when graphed or plotted. It is often used to describe if the data is symmetrical or skewed

Range

the difference between the lowest and highest data values. It is the scale of data.

center

value or values around which most of the data points cluster.

Variability

when the observations from a data set are not all the same (it is the extent to which data diverges from the average).
