Neuroglia (CNS and PNS)
Neuroglia
+cells that provide metabolic support and immune protection for neurons +make up 50% of brain mass
CNS Neuroglia: Ependymal Cells
+line the cerebrospinal fluid-containing cavities of the brain and spinal cord +assist in producing, circulating and monitoring the CSF
CNS Neuroglia: Astrocytes
+most abundant glial cells +give nervous tissue structural support +connect between neurons and capillaries +regulate chemical environment
CNS Neuroglia: Microglia
+play a protective role similar to macrophages of the immune system +monitor the health of neurons
Oligodendrocytes:
+provide myelination in the central nervous system
Neuroglia of the PNS:Satellite Cells
+surround the soma of neurons in peripheral ganglia +help regulate and stabilize the environment around neuron cell bodies in the PNS
Neuroglia of the PNS : Schwann cells
provide myelination in the peripheral nervous system
