I think he would have felt extremely lonely. He was separated from the only person he was close to in the camp. I imagine he was also very scared because he didn't know what to expect. However at the end of the day he felt very relieved. He also was very happy when he found out his father was okay, so his range of emotions was extremely sad and extremely happy.

Describe the range of emotions that Wiesel might have experienced on the day he was separated from his father.

Wiesel's father gives him the spoon and knife out of fear that he might die. This is a genuine and sad moment because it shows just how little they had. This was all his father owned to himself to pass on to his son, and all it was was a spoon and a knife. This shows the state of poverty they were in in these camps.

Explain why Wiesel's father gives him the knife and spoon. What does this "inheritance" tell you about the state of their lives?

I think Wiesel would finish the sentence saying, "Find the light," because his world was full of night and darkness, and all he needed to do was find the light and do all he could to overcome the adversity. I would finish the statement saying, "Look to God," because, as a Christian, we draw near to God in the hard times and let Him guide us and fill us with his love and peace instead of staying focused on the hardship we are facing.

How might Elie Wiesel complete the following sentence, "In the face of adversity, one must...?" How would you complete it?

I think almost losing my dad would have been the most difficult experience to cope with. He was so happy they were both going to be okay, and then he heard his dad say his number was written down, and he was having to go back to a selection. Having your dad hand you all he had and believing he was not going to come back alive would have been extremely hard to deal with, and I'm sure he will never forget that feeling or that moment.

If you were Elie Wiesel, what aspect of your experience in the camps would have been most difficult to cope with.

Their relationship to Wiesel shows the bond that connects you after facing life-or-death situations together. They all cared for each other, fought for each other, and helped each other not feel alone. They play a part in the retelling of these events by being eyewitnesses to all Wiesel had to say. In the book it says they wept with him, so we know they were very close.

Of what importance might Tibi and Yossi be to Elie Wiesel and his retelling of these events? Use details from the selection in your response.

This "gift" is meant sarcastically. The gift was a selection in which each man was paraded in front of the SS naked. Sick ones were killed, and healthy ones stayed alive to keep working in the camps.

To what does Wiesel refer when he says, "The SS gave us a fine New Years gift"?

The head of their block told them to move around so they would get some color in their faces, to run and not walk, to not look at the SS, and to not be afraid.

What advice did the head of Wiesel's block offer before the prisoners passed before the prisoners passed by the SS officers?

By reading this section, I have realized how truly horrific this event was. I have also learned about the selection process, and what the men in the camps had to endure. Hearing this story told through first person has given me a better understanding of what life was like in the concentration camps. It also makes this event seem so much more realistic to me and not just like another story in my head.

What have you learned by this reading selection. What difference does it make to hear about the Holocaust from one who lived through it?

After what seemed like a miracle, the author and his father both passed the selection and lived to see another day.

What is the resolution of this selection?

Tibi and Yossi were men that that had changed their unit at the same time the author had. they were also his friends in the unit.

Who are Tibi and Yossi?

As I stated in the first question, the gift was meant sarcastically because it was actually a horrific selection in which they could be chosen to get killed. This is an example of verbal irony because the author was saying that the SS was giving them a nice gift, but he was actually meaning the opposite of that because it was a terrible life-or-death test.

Why is the first sentence of this selection an example of verbal irony, where someone says one thing and means another?

I think he titled his memoir Night because he was living a life full of darkness, and darkness comes in the night. To him, I'm sure this whole experience was like living only in the night where nothing good happens, and there is no light shed on anything.

Why might Wiesel have titled his memoir Night?

As a Jew himself, he might have wanted to help ease the situation for them. If he could give just a little bit of hope for survival to them it could help them not panic and freak out or maybe ease the pain of what they would have to face after being selected.

Why might the block leader have lied to the men who were selected, telling them nothing would happen to them?

The SS had written down his name, and he was going to have to go to a decisive selection to see if he would be killed or not.

Why was the narrator's father told to stay behind in the camp?

I absolutely think so. No one would have wanted to talk to them or get close to the devastation that filled them. I'm sure they felt that no one cared at all, and I'm sure they were too focused on themselves to realize other numbers were written down, and they were not alone.

Wiesel wrote, "Those whose numbers had been noted stood apart, abandoned by the world." Do you think this sentence effectively describes how these men might have been feeling? Explain.
