I think he would have felt extremely lonely. He was separated from the only person he was close to in the camp. I imagine he was also very scared because he didn't know what to expect. However at the end of the day he felt very relieved. He also was very happy when he found out his father was okay, so his range of emotions was extremely sad and extremely happy.

Wiesel's father gives him the spoon and knife out of fear that he might die. This is a genuine and sad moment because it shows just how little they had. This was all his father owned to himself to pass on to his son, and all it was was a spoon and a knife. This shows the state of poverty they were in in these camps.

Explain why Wiesel's father gives him the knife and spoon. What does this "inheritance" tell you about the state of their lives?

I think Wiesel would finish the sentence saying, "Find the light," because his world was full of night and darkness, and all he needed to do was find the light and do all he could to overcome the adversity. I would finish the statement saying, "Look to God," because, as a Christian, we draw near to God in the hard times and let Him guide us and fill us with his love and peace instead of staying focused on the hardship we are facing.

I think almost losing my dad would have been the most difficult experience to cope with. He was so happy they were both going to be okay, and then he heard his dad say his number was written down, and he was having to go back to a selection. Having your dad hand you all he had and believing he was not going to come back alive would have been extremely hard to deal with, and I'm sure he will never forget that feeling or that moment.

If you were Elie Wiesel, what aspect of your experience in the camps would have been most difficult to cope with.

Their relationship to Wiesel shows the bond that connects you after facing life-or-death situations together. They all cared for each other, fought for each other, and helped each other not feel alone. They play a part in the retelling of these events by being eyewitnesses to all Wiesel had to say. In the book it says they wept with him, so we know they were very close.

This "gift" is meant sarcastically. The gift was a selection in which each man was paraded in front of the SS naked. Sick ones were killed, and healthy ones stayed alive to keep working in the camps.

By reading this section, I have realized how truly horrific this event was. I have also learned about the selection process, and what the men in the camps had to endure. Hearing this story told through first person has given me a better understanding of what life was like in the concentration camps. It also makes this event seem so much more realistic to me and not just like another story in my head.

This is an example of verbal irony because the author was saying that the SS was giving them a nice gift, but he was actually meaning the opposite of that because it was a terrible life-or-death test.

I think he titled his memoir Night because he was living a life full of darkness, and darkness comes in the night. To him, I'm sure this whole experience was like living only in the night where nothing good happens, and there is no light shed on anything.

As a Jew himself, he might have wanted to help ease the situation for them. If he could give just a little bit of hope for survival to them it could help them not panic and freak out or maybe ease the pain of what they would have to face after being selected.

I absolutely think so. No one would have wanted to talk to them or get close to the devastation that filled them. I'm sure they felt that no one cared at all, and I'm sure they were too focused on themselves to realize other numbers were written down, and they were not alone.
