when pancreas fails to produce enough insulin or body's cells fail to properly use insulin; causes high levels of glucose in the blood and even some in urine; body cells don't have enough glucose though; may lose weight, feel weak and always be hungry

Type 1 diabetes

when pancreas produces little or no insulin; must get insulin injections

Type 2 diabetes

pancreas doesn't make enough insulin or body cells do not respond normally to insulin; maybe be able to control symptoms by proper diet, weight control, and exercise

insulin

produced by pancreas; a chemical that enables body cells to take in glucose from the blood and use it for energy

substance or factor in the environment that can cause cancer
