Occupancy Classifications
Residential Group R
R-1, R-2, R-3, R-4 Those for the purpose of sleeping when not classified as Institutional Group I.
Storage Group S
S-1, S-2 Those that are used for storage and are not classified as hazardous occupancies.
Residential Group R-2
Those containing sleeping units or more than two dwelling units where occupants are primarily permanent in nature. Example: apartments, non-transient boarding houses w/ more than 16 persons, convents, dormitories, frats & sororities, non-transient hotels & motels, live/work units, monasteries, vacation timeshares.
A-3
Those intended for worship, recreation, or amusement. Example: Amusement arcade, art galleries, bowling alleys, community halls, courtrooms, dance halls, exhibition halls, funeral parlors, gymnasiums (w/o spectator seating), indoor swimming pools, indoor tennis courts, lecture halls, libraries, museums, places of religious worship, pool and billiard parlors, waiting areas in transportation terminals.
Low-Hazard Storage Group S-1
Those not classified as Group S-2. Examples: Bags, books, clothing, furniture, glues, grains, leather, linoleum, lumber, silks, soaps, tires, upholstery.
High-Hazard Group H-2
Those posing a deflagration or accelerated burning hazard. Example: Class I, II, or IIIA flammable or combustible liquids (normally stored in open containers or closed with more than 15lbs per square inch pressure). Combustible dusts where manufactured, generated, or used in concentration or conditions that creat fire or explosion hazard.
Institutional Group I-2
Those used for medical care on a 24-hr basis for more than 5 persons who are not capable of self-preservation. Example: Foster care, detoxification, hospitals, nursing homes, psychiatric hospitals. Conditions listed in IFC 2015.
Assembly Group A
A-1, A-2, A-3, A-4, A-5
Miscellaneous Group U
Accessory and miscellaneous structures not classified in any specific occupancy. Examples: Agricultural building, barns, carports, fences more than 6ft high, grain silos, greenhouses, retaining walls, sheds, stables, tanks, towers.
Institutional Group I-4
Adult and child day care for those occupied by more than 5 persons of any age who receive custodial care for less than 24 hrs by persons other than parents or guardians, relatives by blood, marriage, or adoption, in a place other than the home of the person cared for.
Factory Industrial F-2 Low-Hazard Occupancy
Factory or industrial uses involving the fabrication or manufacturing of non-combustible materials which, during finishing, packaging, or processing, do not involve a significant fire hazard. Example: Beverages up to and including 16% alcohol, brick and masonry, ceramic products, foundries, glass products, gypsum, ice, metal products.
High Hazard Group H
H-1, H-2, H-3, H-4, H-5 Those that involve the manufacturing, processing, generation, or storage of materials, that constitute a physical or health hazard in quantities in excess of those allowed in control areas complying with section 5003.8.3 based on the maximum allowable quantity limits set forth in Table 5003.1.1(1)&(2). Exceptions that shall be classified as occupancy they most nearly resemble: 13 listed in code
Institutional Group I
I-1, I-2, I-3, I-4 Those in which care or supervision is provided to persons who are or are not capable of self preservation without physical assistance or in which persons are detained for penal or correctional purposes or in which the liberty of the occupants is restricted.
A-1
Occupancies with fixed seating that are intended for the production and viewing of performing arts or motion picture films. Example: motion picture and television production studio sound stages, motion picture theaters, symphony and concert halls, television and radio studios admitting an audience, theaters.
High-Hazard Group H-5
Semiconductor fabrication facilities and comparable research and development areas in which hazardous production materials (HPM) are used and the aggregate quantity of materials is in excess of those listed in Tables 5003.1.1(1)&(2).
Low-Hazard Storage Group S-2
Storage of non-combustible materials. Example: asbestos, bagged cement, electrical motors, glass, gypsum boards, metals, parking garages.
Business Group B
The use of a building or structure for office, professional or service-type transactions, including storage of records and accounts. Example: Airport traffic control towers, Abu story care facilities (serving 5 or fewer patients), animal hospitals, kennels and pounds, banks, barber and beauty shops, car wash, civic administration, clinic out-patient, dry cleaning and laundries, educational occupancies for students above 12th grade, electronic data processing, laboratories, motor vehicle showrooms, post offices, professional services, radio and tv stations.
High-Hazard Group H-3
Those containing materials that readily support combustion or that pose a physical hazard. Example: Class I, II, or IIIA flammable or combustible liquids (normally stored in closed containers or closed with 15lbs per square inch pressure), combustible fibers, consumer fireworks, cryogenic fluids oxidizing, flammable solids, organic peroxides class II and III, oxidizers class 2&3 (same as flamm. liquids req), oxidizing gases, unstable materials class 2, water reactive materials class 2.
Factory Industrial F-1 Moderate-Hazard Occupancy
Those factory industrial uses not classified as F-2. Example: Aircraft manufacturing, appliances, athletic equipment, automobiles/motor vehicles, bakeries, beverages over 16% alcohol content, bicycles, boats, cameras, canvas or similar fabric, carpets including cleaning, electric generation plants, engines, metals, machinery, millwork, paper mills, soaps, tobacco.
Institutional Group I-1
Those for more than 16 persons, excluding staff, who reside on a 24-her basis in a supervised environment and receive custodial care. Examples: Alcohol and drug centers, assisted living, congregate facilities, group homes, halfway houses, residential board and care, residential board and custodial, social rehab facilities. Conditions listed in 2015 IFC
Residential Group R-4
Those for more than 5 but not more than 16 persons, excluding staff, who reside on a 24-hr basis in a supervised residential environment and receive custodial care. Examples: Alcohol and drug centers, assisted living, congregate care, group homes, halfway houses. Conditions listed in 2015 IFC.
Factory Industrial Group F
Those intended for assembling, disassembling, fabricating, finishing, manufacturing, packaging, repair or processing operations, that are not Group H high-hazard or Group S storage occupancy. F-1 Moderate-Hazard Occupancy F-2 Low-Hazard Occupancy
A-2
Those intended for food and/or drink consumption. Have non-fixed seating. Example: Banquet Halls, casinos, night clubs, restaurants, cafeterias, and similar dining facilities, taverns, and bars.
A-5
Those intended for participation in or viewing outdoor activities. Example: Amusement park structures, bleachers, grandstands, stadiums.
Mercantile Group M
Those intended for the display and sale of merchandise, involves stocks of goods, wares or merchandise incidental to such purposes accessible to the public. Example: dept. stores, drug stores, markets, motor fuel dispensing facilities, retail or wholesale stores, sales rooms.
Educational Group E
Those intended for use by more than 6 persons at any one time for educational purposes through the 12th grade. Accessory to Places of Worship: religious educational rooms and auditoriums that are part of a place of worship, which have occupant loads of less than 100, retain classification of Group A-3. Group E Day care facilities: includes those occupied by more than 6 children 2 years of age and older who receive educational, supervision or personal care services for less than 24 hours a day.
A-4
Those intended for viewing of indoor sporting events and other activities that have spectator seating. Example: Arenas, skating rinks, swimming pools, tennis courts.
High-Hazard Group H-1
Those posing a detonation Hazard Example: pyrophoric material, organic peroxides, oxidizers class 4, unstable (reactive materials) class 3 detonable, and class 4.
Residential Group R-1
Those primarily transient in nature. Examples: Boarding houses w/ more than 10 occupants, hotels, motels.
Institutional Group I-3
Those which are inhabited by more than 5 persons who are under restraint or security. Generally for those incapable of self-preservation due to security measures not under the occupants' control. Example: Correctional centers, detention centers, jails, prerelease centers, prisons, reformatories. Five conditions listed in IFC 2015.
High-Hazard Group H-4
Those which contain materials that are health hazards. Example: corrosives, highly toxic materials, toxic materials.
Residential Group R-3
Where occupants are primarily permanent in nature and not classified as Group R-1, 2, 4, or I. Examples: non-transient boarding house/congregate w/ 16 or fewer occupants, transient boarding houses w/ 10 or fewer occupants, buildings that do not contain more than 2 dwelling units, care facilities that provide for 5 or fewer persons, lodging houses w 5 or fewer guest rooms.
